Hmmm... In that case, probably just are lying low... hopefully

BINGO! We were driving to town and about 1km down the road from here
lo and behold a flock of about 20-30 of them ran across the road in
front of us. No chicks but I imagine the chicks are all grown up by
now. After all quail aren't all that big. No pictures as it happened
too fast and we weren't prepared. However I was happy to see them and
am now more hopeful that the local neighbourhood flock is just lying
low for now and will show themselves again after Labour Day if not
    sooner.

That is reassuring... :) Any chance that might have been your local
flock, having moved a ways....? Or don't they go so far afield...?
Does human activity arounf your area decrease after Labour Day...?

    Hey Nancy!

Any chance that might have been your local flock, having moved a
    ways....?

Possibly. I have no idea how far they wander but given the frequency I used to
see them before mid May I thought a few city blocks might be the extent of their range. I am basing this on earlier evidence of spotting a different flock in the school yard, which is roughly two city blocks away, after spotting
the local flock in my back yard a few minutes earlier when driving to town a couple years ago.

Does human activity arounf your area decrease after Labour Day...?

Yes. Even moreso after Canadian Thanksgiving (second Monday in October). After that it is just what we in the neighbourhood call regulars. I have been a regular for about 17-ish years now.

That would seem to indicate a smaller range, at least normally...
perhaps they banded together for safety....?

Yes. Even moreso after Canadian Thanksgiving (second Monday in

Yes, I know... what we call Columbus Day is your Thanksgiving... it
can be end of season for some of the campers up at our Boyd Pond, too...
they plan on closing camp that weekend... :)

After that it is just what we in the neighbourhood call

    Hey Nancy!

perhaps they banded together for safety

Offhand I don't think so but I am not exactly an expert on the subject. From what I've seen over the past 20 years or so the flock is anywhere between 15 to
30 birds depending on the season. As for the range it could be bigger than I've noticed but it seems about right. This year has been different as far as how often I've spotted them and never did see any chicks this year. Mind you I
don't believe I've seen any of the local flock since May. My neighbour Paul claims to have heard them in the brambles by his place but never actually saw them.

Do the others accept you as a regular now...?

The long time residents do. We call ourselves lifers. There are about a half dozen of us left as a few have died and a few have moved on to other pastures, usually due to health reasons some call 'old age'. Although I am not exactly a
spring chicken I am hoping to squeeze out a few more years and this is as good of a place for squeezing out years as any I have run across. I have run across
some very beautiful places but the living there would be much more demanding than this place is and is very beautiful in the grand scheme of all things in the beauty realm. Also the lifers, and some of the newbies, depend on me for linking their so-called smartphones to the vast wasteland of cyberspace. Beats
me why I am the guru of smartphones given that I have never owned one and don't
have any plans to ever get one. I think they are overpriced annoying pieces of
    crap.

    Silly people.

You at least understand the workings well enough (and better than your neighbors) to link them to cyberspace, that's enough to make you the
guru... Richard doesn't have one either, not even a dumb phone, but he
    can make them work, too...

I think they are overpriced annoying pieces of crap.

Mostly agreed. ;) I do have a very basic cell phone, which I find
convenient, but it's not for anything else other than talk and text.

    Hey Nancy!

Sounds like a good place to stay, then...

    Better than most methinks.

You at least understand the workings well enough

I built the two servers that are currently doing all the work or at least one of them. The other - the one I am typing this reply on - is more of my plaything where I am free to experiment which is something I enjoy doing. "99 Bottles of Beer" lives on here.

I do have a very basic cell phone

I still have a landline but have been tempted by basic cell service in the past. So far there really hasn't been a need but I do see the advantage of them. However I don't like the teeny-tiny displays that I cannot read without coke bottle type glasses. Also my fingers are too fat for the itsy-bitsy keypad dealies. My regular phone is much more of what I require of a phone.

anything else other than talk and text

Some of the people here watch movies on their so-called smartphones. Near as I
can tell the small machine I turned into their access point to the outside world is where all the smart comes from. Without it they just have phones. The service from the usual providers is extremely lousy and far too expensive although I do understand why. Not enough customers out this way to make it commercially viable. Not being in the business and knowing the basics is where
I come in. Also I am very curious which helps. However if and when something breaks down it is unlikely to get replaced as far as the wireless end of things
goes. I personally don't have much use for it and nobody here is interested in
getting anything local working on it so I really don't have any incentive. Most of what is out there in cyberspace is worthless to me and repeating it on wireless is pointless and not worth the additional costs.

We still have our landline... and it still is my primary phone... the
cell is for when I'm not home and wish to have communication away from
home... I do ok with the small display and the little keys, though...

anything else other than talk and text

Some of the people here watch movies on their so-called smartphones.

Yup... and my son uses his as a portable computer, which just happens to
have phone service as part of it....

If your neighbors kicked in for the costs to fix things to keep their
less expensive service going, you'd be willing to work on things,
    though...?

    Hey Nancy!

Have you seen any evidence of the quails lately....?

Not yet. I think my timing might be off. Perhaps when things quiet down I'll make more of an effort to seek them out.

my son uses his as a portable computer

I noticed my eldest daughter uses hers like a Nintendo machine (do they still exist?) when she was last here.

Give you a challenge, and you're off and running...

    That can work.

    kicked in for the costs

Not enough neighbours for that to work out. Before wireless I was paying all the costs anyhow so that never was my incentive. Getting wireless working was originally just another challenge/distraction. Also if I take money from them then I'm committed to keeping it working whereas now I can call it quits without any guilt feelings. Also, also they pay me back in other ways ... sometimes.
