backfire, as in the southeast Asian beriberi
phenomenon, where eating unprocessed rice with
the bran protected against vitamin B deficiency,
so the lower classes thrived and the mercantile
(largely of Chinese origin) died in droves.
    Indeed, and exactly.... ;)
The Commie side of me says "right on," while
the Chinese mercantile side of me shudders.
The sad thing being that those that suffered did so needlessly, just for status... not that that is all that extraordinary, of course...

In this case, the higher SES suffered. In most
situations, it's the lower classes, which is
    equally sad.

They're all a bunch of crooks, made crookeder
by the stock company system, which rewards
behaviors that are not healthy for individuals
    or society.
Just for a select number, stockholders and high management....

Even awful situations benefit somebody; so
sometimes those who would do so go out of
    their way to cause them.

We got in right on time, got to the train station
at 5:40, wandered off in the more or less right
    direction and found someone friendly-enough-looking
that I asked "Wo kann Ich finden den goldene Reiter,"
to which she answered, "You want the Westin Bellevue,
it's down that way through the park." So we were at
the hotel before 6, showered and changed before 7,
and in the concert hall before 7:30. it being a 10-min
walk across the river to the Semperoper, which though
I knew was historic, I didn't know how historic.
So it all went well... were there demonstrations to worry about..?

No, just lots of well-dressed older people on
    their way to cultural events.

Sat close enough to Gidon Kremer to hear every
bow scrape (few) and sniff (frequent). And to be
able to report that Paavo Jarvi has a pleasantish
tenor voice and a disconcertilg habit of crooning
along with the music. We were in the first row center
just barely on the first violin side, seats 14 and 15
    out of 32.
That was close, indeed... and the concert was otherwise enjoyable...?

It was a good concert - the orchestra was as
good as the best I've played in, the conductor
was a conductor rather than a poseur, and
Gidon Kremer, though elderly and doddering
(5 years older than me), is still Gidon Kremer.

Off and on, though a couple days ago she had to talk
her way into the Cologne Zoo to use the bathroom.
The guard was going to require the admission price
as deposit, but then he saw me and said, he is your
deposit, and I had a funnish 15 minutes chatting
    with him.
That worked out well enough, then.... :)
One of those fun random things.
    Nice.

It was a good day, punctuated only by Lilli's
    health anxieties.

    Kolrabju Salati
categories: salads, root vegetables, dairy, Larvian
    serves: 6 to 8

    1 c farmer's cheese or cottage cheese
    1/3 c heavy cream
1/4 c peeled and grated Granny Smith apple
1 Tb kosher salt, more to taste
2 md kohlrabies, peeled and grated
freshly ground black pepper to taste
    2 Tb sliced parsley leaves

Drain cheese overnight in a cheesecloth-
lined strainer. In a large bowl, stir cheese,
cream, apple, salt, kohlrabies, and pepper
until evenly combined; let sit for 10 min,
so flavors can marry. Garnish with parsley.

Very nice... :) And may he be able to continue for some years to come,
as well... Once upon a time he'd've seemed quite ancient to me.... but
there certainly is a different perspective as one gets older one's
    self... (G)
