From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Sunday, April 15, 2018 05:46:06
Hoo boy, this is turning into a whining about
health echo, and I am the prime culprit, I admit.
    It's what's happening currently... ;)
    Sad to say.
Maybe we'll all heal to a sufficient extent, and the whining will tone
    down some... (G)

One can hope that, but my fear is that our
whining will tone down only in quantity, not
in volume. As someone reminded me recently,
    it's all downhill from here.

It sounds worse than my freezer, even... Were you able to use the
chicken thighs for anything...? or were they too far gone...? And
have you found out any more secrets in the meantime....?
I haven't looked carefully and don't plan to.
Probably a very smart idea... :)

I'm back east for meetings and stuff, and
one joy is dealing with yet another friend's
freezer - it's not so bad, because we went
through it last year, but still there is the
ghost of chickens past to deal with.

There was the 2014 bag of dried blueberries in
    the cupboard, though.
Were they still usable...? Or did you toss them...
And, were you able to do anything with that block of chicken thighs...?

I left town before having to deal with the
issue. One problem is that they were frozen
in a block rather than being portioned out in
one- or two-serving packs, which would have
made them manageanle (they are thighs, after
all). Perhaps Lilli's son, who is due in soon,
    can figure things out.

So its the cachet of the item...
That's what drives profits. Asparagus just
    doesn't cut it.
Once upon a time, asparagus had a cachet, too... but one does need to
    not overcook it... (G)

    Asparagus did, because it's interesting,
and its seasonality gave it appeal. It's
no longer seasonal. My friend Bonnie, who
is of a certain age, reminisces about the
    days before refrigerated trucks, trains,
and airplanes and says that she used to
buy a crate of asparagus and serve it twice
a day for a couple weeks, with everyone (as
she claims) cherishing every bite, knowing
that there wouldn't be any more for 11 months.

One pays for the name, not the quality, then.... which I believe has
    been discussed before... ;)
For sure - but truffles, one just can't get the
    quality, especially here.
So the informed should know not to spend the premium on what isn't going
to be what it should have been... :)

There really is a bit of an emperor's new
clothes thing about some foods, and truffles
are the greatest exemplar that I know of.

Yeah, I know.... ;) And it's across the board, not just in cooking... I keep hearing from a friend of mine the latest and greatest "truths" that she's just found on the Internet or seen in a TV show....
Lilli does that sometimes - she will shout from
the other room that she's discovered something,
and I'll say, where'd you read that, and it turns
out to be some insane or at least demilune site.

The most recent was when she read that a New York
hot dog vendor was selling sausages made out of
dog meat. I noted that it sounded like an April
Fool joke, and only then did she do any legwork, at
least admitting that she'd been duped. There are
no doubt gazillions of readers who don't get
corrected and so spread the cancer; or they don't
believe the more reliable sites that do the
debunking. Here are a couple quotes from the
original article that should be immediate
    giveaways -

people always come buy Chow Chow hot dogs

    and

Killing dogs and cats for meat is still legal
in 44 U.S. states but in the state of New York
    it is expressly prohibited

    and the Snopes takedown -

The original article also had a sidebar with links
    to other items headlined

Morgue employee cremated by mistake while taking
    a nap

    and

Colorado: Hunter claims he was sexually assaulted
    by a sasquatch

    and

Boston: Members of Midget Crime Gang Suspected of
    55 Break-ins

the other items in the sidebar being too risque
    for this echo.

Lilli's source was multiplehand, filtered through
a Facebook friend, but that's not a great excuse.

Not exclusively downhill... there are some better spots than others, for example take Gail's knee surgery which made things better for her after
    she recovered... ;)

    Funny how that happens...

Hopefully... ;) One might have to cook them all up at once in a big
soup pot, and then portion out the cooked meat into meal packets...

And having that much, it would hold you for the 11 months there wouldn't
be any... (G) I think once a day for a couple of weeks might still have
been all I'd be able to handle... :)
