• 936 leaving SAN, from an old trip

From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to ALL on Thursday, June 28, 2018 11:21:10
For my last day we were going to see the corpse flower
at the San Diego Botanic Garden and then have dinner
on Convoy St., but the word was that owing to
unseasonably cool weather the plant wasn't going to be
blooming, so we bagged the entire operation, and I
cooked a couple more of those Costco steaks. Good choice.
If you but carefully, you can get well-marbled choice
ribeyes for $10/lb or strips (which I prefer) for a buck
less. Prime are a few dollars more, not worth the
difference in my estimation. But why pay two to ten
dollars a pound more at the supermarket (depending on
the fanciness of the store) for no better? Sure, you
have to buy them in packs of 5 lb and up, but if your
freezer is effective, the last couple steaks, though
not so special as the first couple, are still as good
as you can get from the Outback. By the way, Lilli
sent me a note that the flower bloomed a couple days
later, thoughtfully on free day at the park.

For some reason the United area in San Diego seems extra
chaotic, beyond the normal unpleasantness. Whatever, I got
my seat with easy access to the restroom, so all was well.

    Taciturn but okay cabin crew.

Las Vegas right at midnight - now there's excess
electricity consumption. You can see it from dozens of
miles away - I wouldn't be surprised if the light
pollution could be seen at Mt. Palomar.

Paqui nacho cheese especial tortilla chips - This is
the company that offers the Carolina Reaper tortilla
chip at $4.99 for one normal-size chip in its individual
carton; these chips, however, have nothing to distinguish
them. I believe there might be more Romano in the coating
than Doritos (for example) uses, but nothing else. After
one little baglet of these I switched to a banana.

With all this glass of red wine that was so flummoxingly
tasteless that I should have recorded its name (but did
    not) for posterity's sake.

We got in a bit early, and I dawdled a bit before the club
opened. The catering was scanty, harking back to the olden
days. After a couple hours of diddling about with the mail
and the Fido, it was time to go to the gate, where as
usual boarding was more chaotic than usual.

Peter Schickele (PDQ Bach) used to have a mock radio
station, Double you double oh eff Hoople, a service of
the University of Southern North Dakota. In the
programming were the Bright and Early Show and the Dull
and Late Show. This flight was the Dull and Early Show.
Catering was a cranberry orange scone, actually not too
bad, and (for me) a Courvoisier. Little did I know that
this was to be one of my last Courvoisiers - United has
    discontinued it. Poop on them.

Actually, if you use the vacuum sealer like Gail does, that last couple
of steaks will be as good as the first *years* later.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

    Title: Steak & Guinness Pie
Categories: Newsgroups, Main dish, Beef, Pies
    Yield: 4 servings

    2 1/4 lb Round beef
    1 tb Flour
    1 ts Sugar- brown
    1 tb Dryfruit- raisins
    5 Onions
    10 fl Oz Guinness
    8 sl Bacon rashers
    3 oz Lard
    Herb- parsley
    ;chopped
    Pastry- short crust

Cut the steak into bite-sized cubes, roll in seasoned flour and brown
in the lard with the bacon, chopped small. Place the meat in a
casserole, peel and chop the onions and fry until golden before
adding them to the meat. Add the raisins and brown sugar, pour in the
Guinness, cover tightly and simmer over a low hat or in a very
moderate oven (350F/180C/Gas 4) for 2 1/2 hours. Stir occasionally
and add a little more Guinness or water if the rich brown gravy gets
too thick. Meanwhile, line a deep pie dish with half the pastry: bake
it blind then add the Guinness/beef mixture from the casserole, cover
with the top layer of pastry and bake until finished, probably about
10 more minutes. Source: Sam Waring

In 1998, I was playing Army at the National Training Center that is part of Fort Irwin, CA (out west of Barstow). One night, I found myself on the very extreme northwest part of the installation and using binoculars, I could make out Vegas pretty easily. I don't know how far away I was but I was probably within less than 100 miles.

No recipe today but I've been sampling at a few nice eateries in Williamsport during my stay here (I will be driving home to TN tomorrow).

Have you got any good recommendations for us when we drive up to NY for
the picnic? Williamsport is about half way there for us.

Meant to mention before... there's an Amish-type place on the north edge
of Lewisburg, store and restaurant... I forget the name, but it's rather obvious what it is... left turn going north, just off Rt 15... my friend
Donna likes to stop there, so we did one trip I did with her....

There's The Brickyard and the Moon & Raven Public House.

(Menus are available in PDF form at http://www.moonandravenpub.com as the website itself is incomplete.)

Both were very good. I had the salmon plate at the Brickyard and the Bavarian Barbarian (hot ham/chees on a hot pretzel; absolutely delicious). I'd recommend them both. I'd say close to $40 for dinner for two depending on what you get at both places. Both do serve alcohol.

Be prepared to park and walk to get to both places. They are both deep in downtown and not a lot of parking. I normally stay at the Holiday Inn which is on the very southern edge of downtown (I can see I-180 from my room normally). It's about a ten minute walk to both places from my hotel. Nothing streneous.

That being said, both places are well worth the walk.

There's a lot of interesting places to eat at in downtown but I am usually so tired that when I am alone on a trip, I stop in nearby Faxon, grab something to go, and take it back to the hotel and pass out. :)

    Later,
    Sean
