• 104 picnic

From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Saturday, August 04, 2018 04:53:14
This year's picnic will be held at my sister's (soon? to be) B&B:
Lydia Archer 3026 County Rt 40, Bloomfield NY 14469....
People can stay right at her house, for the duration; she's asking $125
per person or couple for the entire weekend (or part thereof). That
would also include breakfast Friday morning.

That seems reasonable, especially if there were
breakfast foods available to those who needed
them Monday. In any case those who can afford
more can contribute more to the grocery kitty.

    Beds available:
She says that some of these could be moved to other rooms as needed...
    I'd imagine especially the airbeds...
    In the "playroom" (upstairs)
super-single waterbed (sleeps one) -- I'll use that, presuming I
stay at the house as host, no problems sharing the room... :)
full/queen futon (sleeps one or two)
twin bed (sleeps one) -- MLoo?

Just don't put a massive snorer in the futon. As
far as I go, a twin is fine - on many occasions in
my misspent youth I slept two to a cot, and I'm
    only 10-20 lb more now.

    In an upstairs room
queen high-style airbed (one or two)
single high-style airbed (one) -- Sean?
    In the "sewing" room (upstairs)
queen bed (one or two) -- Shipps got dibs on this one
Also, she said she could go sleep on the other side of the house with
her daughter (what used to be the apartment for our parents), and free
up her king waterbed for another couple of guests... I'm thinking this
would be good for Fords, should they decide to stay overnight not just
go back and forth from Newark, as long as they are ok with a waterbed.

Do the Fords do well in a waterbed? If not,
as I said, the Hampton and Homewood in Victor
are just dying to get my points.

Hafflys plan to use their camper, which they can hook up to water and electric there in the yard...
There's also at least a couch or two... ;)

I could be moved to a couch if there's not
    too much cat hair.

    Thursday, September 6
arrive at house -- she said she can have something light
available for snacking on, should travelers be famished... :)
6 pm As requested, dinner at Taste of Japan (3047 W. Henrietta Rd,
    or so Rochester NY)

Ah, poop - at that time I'll be engaged in a
    possibly acrimonious and certainly emotional
    meeting in Boston.

    Friday, September 7
general shopping for things needed for the cooking day,
    sightseeing as desired
evening dinner at restaurant, TBD... Lots of choices here....

I'd be okay with pretty much anything but might
put in a good word for the Malay place. Or a steak.

    Saturday, Sept 8
all day/ main "Picnic Day"; cooking/visiting/eating/etc. at
    evening the house.... ;)

What does anyone want me to make? As you know,
I have no preferred dishes and a fairly wide
repertoire. I could just make something out of
others' scraps; or as I recall one picnic I
didn't fix anything at all, just helped others
    with chopping and chores.

    Sunday, Sept 9
This will be a church dinner Sunday at our church, so I'm
proposing we make a salad, main dish and dessert to bring to it,
and join in.. The morning service is at 11AM, and the dinner
    generally starts around 1PM...
afternoon/ More visiting, etc; leftovers, stuff we didn't get to...
    evening

That would be mighty social of us, but would
there be enough elbow room for the church cook
people and the echo people? Also, would we sit
in our own segregated table or be spread around
    with the congregation?

    Monday, Sept 10
    departures

    Yay! [not]

So far, as I understand it, the following people are definites (for at
least some portion of the time):
    Burt and Shirley Ford
    Nancy and Richard Backus
    Michael Loo
    Dale and Gail Shipp
    Steve and Ruth Haffly
    Sean Dennis

    Carol Shenkenburger
    Shawn and Andrea Highfield
    (some local Rochester friends?)
    Dave Drum?
    Definite nos:
    Jim Weller
    Bill Swisher
    Did I miss anyone....? :)

Probably not; definitely not among the
    definites.

I'm sure there will be... along with picnic leftovers for those of us
that don't do breakfast usually... ;)

Haven't specifically checked with them on that, but I did send this same posting to them in email, so presumably they may have seen that... ;)
Dunno if they'd want to stay in Victor over going home...

I've been wondering if there would be any interest in visiting the

I'd be okay with pretty much anything but might
put in a good word for the Malay place. Or a steak.

One of the choices I was considering was Abyssinia, the Ethiopian
restaurant... :) And the Malay place was another consideration... I
don't know of any good steakhouses (non-chain) locally... there may well
be, but none on our usuals list...

The plan would be to make our offerings on Saturday along with the other
picnic things and just bring them in on Sunday... As to seating, that
could be done however it seems appropriate at the time... :) I did
check with Carol, she's fine with it... she may be the one in charge of
it (the team takes turns), and if so, it'll be a brunch, and she'd like
us to bring a breakfast casserole...

If it is a good Ethiopian restaurant, we would enjoy that. There are
two Ethiopian restaurants within moderate distance of us, but neither is
very good. To get to a good one, we would have to go into the depths of
    some DC areas.

    1 T Olive oil
    1 md Onion, thinly sliced

cook over medium-high heat until golden, stirring frequently, about 5
minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add chopped tomatoes and cook

golden, about 3 minutes. Slide frittata onto platter. Serve warm or
at room temperature, cutting into wedges. (Can be made 2 hours ahead.

I've been wondering if there would be any interest in visiting the
Ganondagon site... it's not far from Lydia's...

    What is that?

A Native American heritage site... at times they've had various
activities... there's, I think, various authentic buildings (I think
they're Iroquis) open to the public... I know that Lydia's used it as a homeschool field trip, but I've never been there in person... Drove by
it once recently, couldn't see much...

One of the choices I was considering was Abyssinia, the Ethiopian
restaurant... :) And the Malay place was another consideration... I

This is indeed a good Ethiopian restaurant... :) We've been there a
number of times, often bringing others to experience it... We brought
    Michael there one visit... :)
