From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Sunday, April 22, 2018 11:33:38
One can hope that, but my fear is that our
whining will tone down only in quantity, not
in volume. As someone reminded me recently,
    it's all downhill from here.
Not exclusively downhill... there are some better spots than others, for example take Gail's knee surgery which made things better for her after
    she recovered... ;)

Downhill can be easy and comforting instead
    of disastrous.

I'm back east for meetings and stuff, and
one joy is dealing with yet another friend's
freezer - it's not so bad, because we went
through it last year, but still there is the
ghost of chickens past to deal with.
    Funny how that happens...

I'm not laughing. The Whole Foods way of
getting people to buy overpriced chicken is to
put it near the grossly overpriced real meat.

one- or two-serving packs, which would have
made them manageable (they are thighs, after
all). Perhaps Lilli's son, who is due in soon,
    can figure things out.
Hopefully... ;) One might have to cook them all up at once in a big
soup pot, and then portion out the cooked meat into meal packets...

    Not my problem, whew!

buy a crate of asparagus and serve it twice
a day for a couple weeks, with everyone (as
she claims) cherishing every bite, knowing
that there wouldn't be any more for 11 months.
And having that much, it would hold you for the 11 months there wouldn't
be any... (G) I think once a day for a couple of weeks might still have
been all I'd be able to handle... :)

    The internationalization of the food
    industry has had interesting consequences,
one of which is that asparagus isn't so
    special any more.

The most recent was when she read that a New York
hot dog vendor was selling sausages made out of dog
meat. I noted that it sounded like an April Fool
joke, and only then did she do any legwork, at least
admitting that she'd been duped. There are no doubt
gazillions of readers who don't get corrected and so
spread the cancer; or they don't believe the more
reliable sites that do the debunking.
Or don't know of them, perhaps...

In which case they don't get corrected.

Killing dogs and cats for meat is still legal
in 44 U.S. states but in the state of New York
    it is expressly prohibited
Yup, those should have raised a red flag or two... SOW, don't tell our
cats that, it might undermine our threats to them... (G)

One of the sensitive and sensible things
that Annie used to do was to refer to me
    as making kung pao cat.

World News Daily Report sounds rather rag-ish, just from the name... ;)

The name was no doubt put together to
point up the satirical nature and poke
fun at publications such as Weekly World
    News and so on.

The original article also had a sidebar with links
    to other items headlined
Morgue employee cremated by mistake while taking
    a nap
    and
Colorado: Hunter claims he was sexually assaulted
    by a sasquatch
    and
Boston: Members of Midget Crime Gang Suspected of
    55 Break-ins
    Your typical tabloid articles.... :)

Back in my day, the fake news pretty much
always had some basis in a fact or two,
mostly I admit blown out of proportion and/or
taken out of context and embellished in
strange ways. Also often the lurid headlines
had little to do with the much tamer story
content, which might have had some basis in fact.

the other items in the sidebar being too risque
    for this echo.
And probably just as bogus... ;)

    Probably? Heh.

Lilli's source was multiplehand, filtered through
a Facebook friend, but that's not a great excuse.
No, not really... Should actually make one more wary... ;)

Depends on whether one trusts one's Facebook
friends. Mine are generally bright people and
don't tend to fall for stuff (Lilli being an
exception). My best prophylaxis, though, is
not to go on Facebook, which I haven't since
last autumn, except possibly once to announce
my survival of the heart attack.

    Vampire dip
    categories: starter, dip, dairy, tastealike
    servings: 12 or so

    8 cloves Garlic
    - (more If You Can Take It, Less If You Can't)
2 c Shredded Parmesan Or Romano Cheese
    8 oz, weight Cream Cheese
    - or Mascarpone, A Sweeter, Italian Cream Cheese
    4 oz, weight Mayonnaise
14 Oz cn Artichoke Hearts, Drained, Rinsed, And Chopped
1 pn Salt (or More To Taste)
    1 ts Fresh Ground Pepper

    Preheat oven to 350F.

Peel and mince garlic cloves. Then, sprinkle
a pinch of salt onto the minced garlic, and
mash with a fork until it becomes a lumpy
paste (this helps reduce the amount of large
garlic chunks in the finished product, and
    is an optional step).

In a large bowl, combine garlic, shredded
    Parmesan, cream cheese, mayo, artichokes,
salt and pepper. Mix until ingredients are
    evenly distributed.

Spread into a greased (8x8" or similar)
baking dish, put the lid on and bake 30 min.
Remove lid and bake for an additional 15 min
or until browned and bubbly on top.

Serve with French bread, or, for the authentic
    Slaterÿs experience, toasted pita wedges.

    2 Garlic cloves, chopped fine
    2 lb Tomato, canned,

    1 lb Whitefish, boneless filets
1/2 lb Each of any or all of :
    Clams, rinsed
    Mussels, scrubbed clean
    Crabs
    Scallops
    Shrimps
    Squid, cleaned and cut into
    1/2 inch circles

Heat a 6 quart heavy stockpot and add the oil, onion, and garlic.
Saute until they are clear, about 5 minutes. Add the remaining
ingredients, except the seafood, and simmer, uncovered, until the
sauce is rich and full flavored, about 1/2 hour. Add the fish and
shellfish in the order given, giving each variety a moment to cook.
The clams will take longer than the the squid.

Serve in bowls with bread and a salad.
Note by Jeff Smith: in some greek communities, the kakkavi is served
with avgolemono sauce stirred in. The older dishes are plain, as
above with the exception of the tomatoes. He likes this version.

Typed by Gail/Dale Shipp, untested. NOTE: I can find no reference
to what avgolemono sauce is in the book. I believe he is saying the
the original version had no tomatoes.
