Ladies and gentlemen of the echo,

I am behind the DOS usage re-learning curve for a variety of reasons.
I am thus reduced to lurking.

In 1988, wondering about the value of having a machine that was both
typewriter and filing cabinet, I developed some small skill using DOS
on the computer I had at the time. However, the neural pathways I
developed as a result are currently quite overgrown and blocked.
It'll be a while before I can stop cutting mental brush and start
trotting back and forth with ease.

While the chain saw is buzzing, I thought I would share two cocktail
recipes that my father liked. (He was fond of Southern Comfort in
various amounts and contexts; Southern Comfort sours were a feature of
    birthday and holiday dinners.)

    Northern Comfort (2 cocktails)

    1-1/2 oz. Triple Sec
    1/2 oz. peach brandy
    1 oz. white rum
    2 drops Angostura bitters
    2 t. orange juice or 1/2 t. concentrate
    1/4 t. citric acid (rounded)

    ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
    Southern Soiree (2 cocktails)
    1/2 oz. whiskey
    1/2 oz. apricot brandy
    1/2 oz. orange liqueur
    1/2 oz. peach brandy
    1 T. lemon juice
    2. t. sugar

Shake with ice. Two T. of water may be added if desired.

So happy to be on the cusp of real autumnal weather here in Western
New York. Got more than a taste of it this past weekend when my feral
rescue tuxedo cat Mr. Jo managed to get out of the house and spend
Saturday and Sunday romping with his cousins before wandering home
    Monday morning.

I trotted around the block at 2 a.m. in sock feet shrieking his
name like a banshee. This just before taking a jaunt to do a couple
of days of cabin camping at Ontario State Park (absolutely gorgeous
treasure park). Everything got sorted out, and I got some great walks
among tall, waving trees . . . and a great filet mignon at a place
    called Cheap Charlie's in Bloomfield.

Hope autumn wherever you are is lovely.

    Edith

I am behind the DOS usage re-learning curve

It's certainly not as intuitive as more modern systems. But BBSing
and it's programs do predate both Windows and easy home access to the
    Internet by quite a bit.

two cocktail recipes that my father liked.

I always enjoy discovering and playing with new cocktails.

He was fond of Southern Comfort

I used to be very fond of it but the formula appears to have
been changed over the years as the brand changed hands and it's not
the same anymore. Yukon Jack is a newer, similar sort of liqueur
being Canadian whisky and honey with orange peel flavouring and goes
well in the same sort of drinks.

    Northern Comfort (2 cocktails)
    1-1/2 oz. Triple Sec
    1/2 oz. peach brandy
    1 oz. white rum
    2 drops Angostura bitters
    2 t. orange juice or 1/2 t. concentrate
    1/4 t. citric acid (rounded)

I would like that but would probably reduce the Triple Sec a bit and
use lemon juice rather than pure citric acid. I haven't even seen
citric acid since my parents, self employed chemists, retired back
in '92. (We had an assay lab right beside the house when I was
    growing up.)

    Southern Soiree (2 cocktails)
    1/2 oz. whiskey
    1/2 oz. apricot brandy
    1/2 oz. orange liqueur
    1/2 oz. peach brandy
    1 T. lemon juice
    2. t. sugar

And that sounds good to me just the way it is.

So happy to be on the cusp of real autumnal weather here in Western
    New York.

We had a very short autumn here: it was basically just Labour Day
weekend! Winter came early this year.

Here's a martini variation that uses a fruit flavoured brandy:

Trying out the online editor... ;)

Lurking's not the worst thing to do... as long as one keeps reading
    messages... :)

And in the meantime, we'll see if we can augment the clearing with
some tutorial reminders or new learnings... ;)

Hmmm.... maybe we should have tried them out for a picnic eating
out... but I had no knowledge of how they'd be... Maybe another
    time.... :)

I always enjoy discovering and playing with new cocktails.

Years ago, in the Richmond, VA newspaper, an article in the
weekend section humorously discusssed the various types of adult
beverage lovers. Those who were devotees of Our Lady of
Self-Deception were people who drank sweet frothy beverages that his
the taste of alcohol. Until I discovered rum, I was a big proponent
    of "girly drinks."

Currently, for reasons still not clear, I cannot imbibe alcohol
without having my hands and feet blow up like balloons.

Life is full of unexpected trials.

. . . Yukon Jack is a newer, similar sort of liqueur
being Canadian whisky and honey with orange peel flavouring and goes
well in the same sort of drinks.

    Yummers!

I understand from Nancy that you live in the Northwest Territories in Yellowknife. My Scotch-Irish pioneer genes are even now shriveling
    into tiny ice crystals.

Here's a martini variation that uses a fruit flavoured brandy:

Sounds like a tasty treat for the seven and a half minutes of summer
    in your area.

Hope your season in the Territories is not too frosty. I read
somewhere that, in preparation for winter, bears eat 4,000 to 7,000
calories a day before hibernating. They go to sleep tubby and wake
    up svelte.

It would be great to prepare for a long winter if we could do that.
