• 600 travel was crusty

United once sent out a CD of Sinatra songs
dealing with travel to its highest-tiered
customers, I think the album/s title track
was "Come Fly with Me," if memory serves.
    Cheap advertising. (G)

Probably quite costly advertising, because there
are the heirs and assigns of the composers and
lyricists and the Sinatra estate (or whoever holds
the rights to the performances) to deal with.

It would have been cheaper to hire a tribute band.

My own life varies between uneasily plush to
    uncomfortably spartan.
Ours is comfortable, but not the lap of luxury by a long shot.

Mine averages out similarly but probably with
    more ups and downs.

It's a fine balance between security and totalitarianism.
So far as I can tell, we've flopped a bit over in one
direction. And the chance that major incident has been
prevented by public hysteria, well, it's not very big.
But not a topic of discussion on this forum so I'll not continue the discussion. Just that you know where we stand.

It's not politics, but it does come pretty
close to religion, I'll conclude by saying
that that well-meaning but not thought out
campaign has done far more damage than good
    to the American psyche.

It might be possible to put in an FOIA request
    at some point.
If you want to pursue it, go for it. Otherwise, just let it lie.
That goes without saying. If I gave more than a
tiny care what such people thought of me, I'd have
    done so long since anyway.
Your life, do as you wish.

    Done.

I'd give it up too, but more likely, not have anything like that to begin with. (G)
I didn't mean to imply that I was ever in favor of
smuggling flammables any place, And taking canned
No, not a smart idea unless you want to spend years as a guest of the government. Don't know what sort of meals you would get, but probably a
step above the old bread and water.

People who actually try tricks like that don't
generally consider if it's a smart idea or not.
For me, I don't care if it's a smart idea, either.

goods through security, unless it's liver or
    something, why bother.
Not worth the time/effort to smuggle anything like that. Tho, shouldn't canned foods be acceptable, in checked baggage? I know you usually don't check anything so there's less of an opportunity to take canned goods
out of or into some place.

They are okay in checked bags, though it's pretty
certain that they will get a careful look; after that
the only concern is customs for international travel.

Title: Soused Oysters - Ostiones En Escabeche
    Hmmmmmmm, interesting..........and different.

I'd not be inclined to use oysters, because
they are too delicate; on the other hand, if
you had a surplus, and they threatened to go
bad, why not. Note I didn't say "if I had,"
beccause for me an overabundance of oysters
    would be a near-impossibility.

    Huitres chaudes
    cat: oysters, main
    Servings: 4

    36 oysters
    5 cl creme fraiche
    75 g butter
    7 cl dry white wine
    pepper

Shuck the oysters over a strainer, saving the liquid.
    Wash the shells and reserve.

Strain the oyster liquid into a saucepan. Add the
oysters and all ingredients. Season. Bring to the boil,
reduce heat, and simmer 30 seconds. Remove the oysters
to a warm place and reduce the liquid to sauce
consistency. Return the oysters to their shells, top
    with sauce, and serve.

A cute aside from the original recipe:

Veiller a ne pas prolonger la cuisson des
huitres au dela du temps preconise, elles
    risqueraient alors de devenir caoutchouteuses.

Make sure not to cook the oysters longer than the
allotted time, or they will run the risk of becoming
rubbery. I love that word, "caoutchouteuses."

Probably quite costly advertising, because there

lyricists and the Sinatra estate (or whoever holds

But at the time, United could probably well afford it. Or thought they
could, which lead eventually to the service seen now.

It would have been cheaper to hire a tribute band.

    Probably so.

My own life varies between uneasily plush to

Wider swings than ours. We don't go as far up or down as you seem to.

I'm not even going to try it out. Sounds like something that falls into

The jellies we brought back from Alaska got the once over. They were in
my checked bag, probably should have gone into carry on, thinking back.

Same here, we don't have any seafood in any sort of abundance. (G0

You touch on a wonder I had this past week. We went to Pigeon Forge, TN
and attended a total of six shows in three days. Some of them were what
might be labeled as tribute shows. There was one on Motown music,
another on music of the 50's and 60's, and another on Christmas tunes.
It occurred to me that perhaps the reason for shows focusing on such old
music might be because of less expensive copyright expenses, maybe even
the copyrights had expired. Of course, another reason was that those
shows appealed to the nostalgia of the target audience. Do you know if
that sort of music is still under royalty?
