    Hi Nancy,

end of the plaza on Lyell Ave at Mt Read Blvd... called Saigon
Pho... Soto (the second generation mechanic at N&J) recommended
it NB>> to Richard... :) He was quite pleased that Linda was so
    happily
    impressed with the place.... :)

OK, we probably will check it out. Hole in the wall places usually do
have the best cooking of a genre, even better than the fancy places because they aren't concerned with a fancy-dancy presentation, just
    good food, cheap.

It's another family-run place... :) Two sisters doing most of the
work, with one of them's son to help at the counter and to be the
    go-fer when needed... ;)

Hmmmmmmmm, sounds like it is worth checking out.

    Hi Nancy,

Richard and I got the stirfry noodles, he had them with chicken,
I with beef.... lots of broccoli and other veggies (chiefly
cabbage and onion and carrots), and plenty of meat... [snip]
Yes, we'd go back again... and try something else. probably...

    So, A, A+ or what? (G)

    A, I'd say...

Sounds like worth going into the rotation of favorites.

to last year's picnic was the Cento brand.... :)
I've used them off and on, depending on what alternatives I've
had. NB>> Wegmans has a good selection... just not that one Pxxxxx brand...

I'd expect them to have a good selection. (G)

Indeed. :) And last week, I did check... Wegmans does have the Cento tomatoes, as I thought... It's the one starting with P that isn't
    there, though many others are...

    Sigh!

a sewing/quilting expo in Raleigh the week before that I want
to get to so we won't have too much time for visiting on the
    way up this year.
    Gotta juggle everything.... ;)
Yes, I missed the expo last year so told Steve I wanted to go
this year. We may be working it a day or two also.
    Representing your group in WF....?
Yes, we got a corner booth, right at the bottom of the escalator
leading into the convention center arena.
That sounds like fun... not a bad location, either... :)

Prime location, right where everybody will see us. (G)

    Indeed... :)

They had it last year also, but I couldn't go as it was the same week as
    our Vermont VBS.

(I had to go look it up on my calendar) Actually, neither... That was
the day I went out to the CharBroil Family Restaurant with other female
members of our HS class... :) It was ok, but not something to add to
    our list...

Tomorrow we are trying the Asian American restaurant right next
door to it, Nam Vang... report to follow... ;)

    OK, looking forward to it.

Richard decided not to go, so it was just Cathy and me... Although the
name on the outside of the building said Asian American, the latter was
nowhere to be found on the menu... Perhaps there was a separate menu for "American" specialties... (G) The menu just listed a number of
Vietnamese entrees, soups, etc... ;) They were out of the one appetizer
that Cathy wanted to try, so she decided to order the soup pictured on
the front of the menu... pictured a couple of good-sized shrimp, some
slices of meat, some veggies, eggs etc... floating in the soup... It did
indeed look quite appealing... :) Then, the first two things I tried
to order they were also out of, so I went for the soup on the cover,
too... :) It was indeed a tasty and well-filled soup, with two kinds of noodles in it, a thin curly ramen type and a thicker clear and softer
rice noodle... They brought out a jar of garlic for us to add to taste,
I did, Cathy didn't... :) A plate of fresh bean sprouts, lime pieces,
hot pepper slices and some sort of green herb (not basil or cilantro,
but similar in appearance) to strip down as additions to the soup also
came... the eggs were whole, but tiny (about the size of a large olive),
there were two per bowl... We both enjoyed the soup, I managed to eat
the whole thing there, Cathy took half home for later... Cathy was a
little put off by their lack of having things available, but we both
agreed that the food was good... We might go back... :)

One nice thing about Nam Vang vs Saigon Pho... the former does better at math... ;) Saigon Pho, I'm not sure how the final reckoning had
anything to do with the printed price in the menu... I'd thought I got something that was 7 or at most 9 dollars... it turned into 12 by the
time we went up to pay... At Nam Vang, the menu said 9 dollars... when
it came time to pay, it was 9 dollars... and the tax was included in
    that 9... :) I felt better about leaving a tip there... ;)

Charbroil Family place sounds like a nice "safe" place, one my parents
would have enjoyed. Thinking back, in the years we were in TX and AZ,
they never tried a Mexican restaurant. There was a German one in AZ for
a while, so they would go there but nothing other than maybe Italian for
ethnic cooking. Most of my siblings are closer to them in tastes than I

Sounds like it was a good meal. Putting American in the name might bring
in customers who might be a bit put off by what they think it too
exotic, but not really, once they try it.

Interesting, most of the diners we've been to have had a good meal for
a reasonable price. There's one in NJ near my aunt's that has a
selection of $8. meal choices--they all come with soup, salad, generous entree and dessert.

That sort is hard to find around here... admittedly I've not tried all
the possibilities... but the places I've been, entrees are more like
$12, and only come with potato and veggie... soup or salad is an
upcharge, dessert is extra. And sandwiches are $8 and up, and only come
with chips and a pickle, or, for a little more, a side of something...
    as I said, slightly overpriced.....

Thinking back, in the years we were in TX and AZ, they never
tried a Mexican restaurant. There was a German one in AZ for a
while, so they would go there but nothing other than maybe
Italian for ethnic cooking. Most of my siblings are closer to
them in tastes than I am, but part of that comes from having
lived in so many different places, and the echo here.
And apparently enough of an adventurous streak... :)

    A bit of that too.

That always helps develop an expanded taste repertoire... ;)

[snippage] We both enjoyed the soup, I managed to eat the whole
thing there, Cathy took half home for later... Cathy was a
little put off by their lack of having things available, but we
both agreed that the food was good... We might go back... :)
Sounds like it was a good meal. Putting American in the name might
bring in customers who might be a bit put off by what they think
it too exotic, but not really, once they try it.
Dunno... I'm still leaning to the two menus theory... If we were
to go back, it might be worth checking to see if there is a
separate menu of "American" food.... maybe... ;)

    Worth a try. (G)

Well... I was back, this time because Edith requested going there... and
I wimped out and didn't ask... ;) Another time maybe... (G)

One nice thing about Nam Vang vs Saigon Pho... the former does
better at math... ;) Saigon Pho, I'm not sure how the final
reckoning had anything to do with the printed price in the
menu... I'd thought I got something that was 7 or at most 9
dollars... it turned into 12 by the time we went up to pay...
At Nam Vang, the menu said 9 dollars... when it came time to
pay, it was 9 dollars... and the tax was included in that 9. :)
I felt better about leaving a tip there... ;)
Sounds like the calculator (human or otherwise) was having an
    off day.
I suspect that it was more the norm that the calculation is
"creative" at Saigon Pho... but still not too expensive for what
it is... I heard that others have had the same issue there... :)

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..................

I think you'd enjoy eating at either (or both) of them, even so... ;)
An interesting tidbit... when we went with Edith on Sunday, there were
the same people there at Nam Vang, but when I paid the check with a
credit card, the tax got added onto the total after all... Still not as creative as next door... ;) Maybe it's a discount for cash... ;)

Speaking of, if you do go thru his books, if one or 2 really
jump out at you as ones you think I'd like, please get them.
Nothing on the Catholic bent, more so the biographies, art or
classics, and no more than 2 unless there's something extra
    extra-ordinary. Thanks.
I'm not too sure on what you'd be wanting, but I can try... :)

Worst that can happen is that they end up at a Good Will in NC.

I might be giving you a phone call from there... ;)

Exactly... My parents' beef stew had tomatoes in it and a fairly
thin broth... stew beef chunks, potatoes, carrots and canned
tomatoes... with parsley, dried onions, s&p probably... and
cooked in the pressure cooker... ;) I didn't make it very often
once I left home, mostly because of the quantity it made.... :)

I started doing it in a crock pot, then switched to my mom's stove top recipe with a slight twist to it. Now it has more of a twist but it
may not be done evolving yet. (G)

I do a semi-homemade quickie version nowadays, using fresh veggies nuked
to almost done and then mixing in a package of Hormel beef tips and
gravy... sometimes I add turmeric and black pepper... and nuke them for
a few more minutes to blend... :)

Yes, it is in Raleigh so I don't want to miss it. A few years ago when
we worked it, there was a quilt hanging a couple of rows over from us
that kept drawing our attention. Finally we went over to look closer,
ended up buying the kit. It's the one Steve is working on now. (G)
So maybe he'll get a new quilt kit this time... ;) Are you going to
be there just the one day, or can you fit in more...?

Steve doesn't think he will be buying any more kits any time soon. He wants to get this one put together first. (G) I may be down there more than one day; Steve isn't sure how much he will be there.

    That makes sense... :) I know you'll enjoy yourself there... :) You'll
get a ride from someone else in your group if Steve doesn't go...?

Yes, and wanting to break away from the way of eating I was brought up

Curiosity, as much as anything. Plus, a cost savings if we can
replicate a favorite restaurant dish at home. Other factors too but probably those 2 are near the top of the list as to why.

Whereas, in my case, I'm generally just trying for something simple
that tastes good... closest I've come to trying to replicate is
eggplant with garlic sauce... and that is definitely my own version,
not particularly close to what we'd get elsewhere... ;)

If it tastes good and something yu want to eat again, go for it. If it's
easy to prep, cook and clean up from, so much the better. (G)

True... and if with a group where someone isn't willing to try
Vietnamese food, it would make more sense to ask about the
"American" food... ;) Or, when I've gone there enough times
maybe, just ask as a curiosity... (G)
And you may find out something interesting along the way of why
they RH>> do, if they do.
    Possibly.. :)

    Done so yet?

Nope... haven't been back there since, yet... :)

    One of these days.......

It is a mostly low-fuss version... longest thing about it is
    chopping the veggies....
Most of our camper meals this time were even less fuss than
that. NB>> You brought things already prepared that just needed
    heating,
    right...?

Some of it, yes. Some we cooked from ingredients bought along the way.
Had a bit of left over Moroccan chicken that our son in law polished
off and enjoyed, now I have to send the recipe out to our daughter.

    No surprise there... ;)

A bit, actually as he's been very much a meat and potatoes eater. I
think Rachel has introduced him to enough new and different things over
the years that he was open to trying the chicken.

    (quilt show)
You'll get a ride from someone else in your group if Steve
    doesn't go...?
    The co-ordinator of the group.
    Ah... that'll work out... ;)
Yes, and now I've got to call her to work things out.
Now that you are home, and it will be soon enough... :)

Which means VT will be here soon also.

    That, too... :)

And I've got a lot to do in the next few weeks!

Last time when Steve and I went, we stopped at our
favorite Indian restaurant on the way home. They folded
about 4 years ago so we no longer have that option.
Sigh... Do you have other options now...?
A number, but just haven't checked any out yet. None of them
    are in WF.
Someday you'll check them out... :)

Hopefully. Will probably check some on line reviews first. Found the
first one thru a coupon book--had a couple of BOGO coupons so decided
    to check it out.

BOGO always is a nice enticement... ;)

Very much so! If not, we'll take a military or senior discount.

Speaking of pickled beets, I have one of your canning containers with

Lots of factors to weigh in... do we want a sit-down meal, or a buffet,

    Hi Nancy,

Speaking of pickled beets, I have one of your canning containers with screwtop lid ready to return to you (from last year's picnic)... it's where I can see it so should remember... ;)

OK, I'll probably pick it up at this year's picnic. I cooked some fresh
beets as part of supper last night--boiled, skinned, sliced and

Yes, but it makes planning interesting at times. Thought I had all of

    Time to punt... (G)

And eventually you'll find a good replacement to add to your

    Hi Nancy,

Speaking of pickled beets, I have one of your canning
containers with screwtop lid ready to return to you (from
last year's picnic)... it's where I can see it so should
    remember... ;)
OK, I'll probably pick it up at this year's picnic.
That's what I figured... likely the next time you'll be
    around...

Yes, we couldn't get out to western NY last year when we were in the Catskills.

And I don't think we'd finished the last of it yet last year anyway...

Really enjoyed it, did you now? (G) I'm glad you did.

I cooked some fresh beets as part of supper last night--boiled,
skinned, sliced and reheated. Then drained and added a bit of
butter blend and salt--yummy! They came from the farmer's
market. NB>> So nice and fresh, too... :) Have you pickled any more yet...?

No, I'll have to check the inventory sheet. I think I've still got
some on the shelf. Just enjoying them fresh, this time of year.

They'll be available into the fall, won't they...? That's a better
time of year for putting things up if one can... ;)

It's going to be a busy fall but I'm not planning on doing any put ups
this year. Just can't stay on my feet long enough with the knee the way
    it is.
Sometimes order and have it delivered is a good option. More
and more places are getting into that now. I've seen that
there's a service that picks up an order from certain
restaurants in Raleigh and delivers--for a fee and within a
limited range. Don't know if they come up to WF.
We have Grubhub in our area... never used it though... seen
drivers picking up at various spots, however... We've rarely
done the order and have it delivered thing... maybe once or
twice in the whole time we've been here... :)

We don't even order pizza out. (G)

I remember having Chinese takeout delivered once... ;)

We delivered Fu's to you last year. (G)

making a potato salad (Penn Dutch type) and doing the clean up.
Taking it easy now so the knee won't growl at me later.
Good thinking... :) A lot of things I used to do standing up
in the kitchen, I now figure ways of doing seated at the
table... NB>> I can reach the stove from there, so that helps.... ;)

I can't, so it's on my feet for a while, then get off them for a
while. I'll have to pull out the stool to keep mear the stove/sink/prep area if the knee gets too bad.

    Stools are handy, too... :)

Quite; I've had this one for some years now. Down side is that some jobs
are better done standing (e.g.--better angle for chopping) so it's up
    and down a good bit.

Exactly... We keep getting a longer and longer list of good
places to go to eat... :)
Funny how that happens. Have you been back to the German deli
place since you took us a few years ago?
Come to think of it, we haven't... It's on the other side of
    town from our usual haunts....

Seems to work that way for us as well. Much as we like the NC State Farmer's Market Seafood Restaurant, it's not on our usual path of
travel so we don't get over there very often. But, we should be near it next week so...................maybe?

    Maybe... :)

No, we headed straight home (with a short stop at Sprouts) after the appointment. I made egg salad sandwiches for lunch instead.

I was more just thinking the polished off and enjoyed part...
so of course she'd need the recipe now... :) Does sound like
Rachel's had a good influence on him... ;)
She has, and some of it has rubbed off on the kids too. Trouble
is, during the school year, she doesn't have much time for
"fancy" RH>> cooking except on week ends. Summer is a bit better, but it's not RH>> really a summer type meal.
So she'll just have to do it some weekend... :)

Probably so, and get her girls involved in helping her.

That would be a good idea... :)

Pass it down to another generation--it's one I grew up with, used it a
lot when the girls were younger.

some but I'm trying not to push the time on my feet.

Just have to find a way to make things work sitting down... ;) Glad the
    brace is helpful... :)

    Stools are handy, too... :)
Quite; I've had this one for some years now. Down side is that
some jobs are better done standing (e.g.--better angle for
chopping) so it's up and down a good bit.
Mommy had different height stools... one, she'd just sorta
balance off the edge of it, essentially still standing, but
    with a little support...
I just have the one, and will probably start using it more.
Sounds like a good idea... :) You might want to look for a
stool that holds you at an about standing position, too... :)

Mine sort of does; I kind of sit/stand on the edge of it. Takes some
of the weight off the feet but gives me the better cutting leverage.

Yup, that's what is needed... :) Get some weight off the feet, but
still have the leverage needed for cutting... :)

Seems to work that way for us as well. Much as we like the NC
State Farmer's Market Seafood Restaurant, it's not on our
usual path of travel so we don't get over there very often.
But, we should be near it next week so..............maybe?
    Maybe... :)
No, we headed straight home (with a short stop at Sprouts) after
the appointment. I made egg salad sandwiches for lunch instead.
Oh, well.... another trip might be more conducive to stopping
    there..... :)
    At some point, it will.
And you'll enjoy it all the more... ;)

Thought about it after the quilt expo but I wanted something quieter
so we went elsewhere. Still had seafood tho.

That worked... and you'll get another chance at the NC State Farmer's
    Market one some time... :)

Pass it down to another generation--it's one I grew up with,
used it a lot when the girls were younger.
Are we still talking about the Moroccan chicken recipe....?
No, this is a cake recipe I grew up with, taught the girls how
to make when they were young.
I thought your mind jumped a track there... ;) You hadn't
actually mentioned cake, we'd been discussing sending her the
Moroccan chicken recipe and then wondering how she'd actually
be able to acomplish making it... :)

Sorry, the last couple of weeks have scrambled my brain.

Understood... :) Way too much going on... :)

Yes, but it makes planning interesting at times. Thought I
had all of next week free and then something got scheduled for
basically all of Tuesday morning in Raleigh.
    Time to punt... (G)
Yes, because the Tuesday was changed to Thursday. Spent Tuesday
shopping for VBS stuff and a few groceries.
    Good flexibility practice... (G)
    Has to be done sometimes.
    Yup... ;)

And we got everything done, don't think anything major was left home.

    Very good... :)

    Hi Nancy,

Of course... :) As I recall, I ended up cutting up the last
egg and the last of the onions to add to something I was
putting together.. just the right finishing touch, it was.. :)
The eggs are one project that I don't mind doing as the end
    results are so yummy. (G)
    That they are... :)

Something I probably should do more often for us. (G)

Probably... just to keep them on hand... ;)

Might do that when we get home. Had some home made pickled beets as part
    of Sunday dinner today.

It's going to be a busy fall but I'm not planning on doing any
put ups this year. Just can't stay on my feet long enough with
the knee the way it is.
There is that... Maybe if the shots help enough, you might
change your mind, but I can see not stressing things any more
    than one has to... :)
Can't stress it for the first couple of days after each shot--no
more than 2 hours at a time on your feet for the first 48 hours.
I can't do that now as it hurts too much. By picnic time I will
    (hopefully) be doing better.

ended up just using one of the Dixie plastic bowls as a dipper of
sorts... He wasn't going to be coming until the last day anyway,
and then ended up not making it because the weather back home had
been too hot and humid for him, and he wasn't up to the drive....

At least you were able to work around the problems. Hopefully the
weather has broken and Richard is feeling more up to things now.

Yup... The weather has broken somewhat... still there's been more
humidity than he's really ok with, but he's been doing much better in general... :)

    Hi Nancy,

    Sounds tasty... :)
They were; the beets were home grown and then pickled. Brought
home some home made dill pickles.
    Someone else's home made...?

Yes, I couldn't have made them in the time we were there.

Wasn't sure if you'd obtained them there, or brought them up with...
    ;)

No, I've not made dill pickles (or bread and butter) in quite a few
years. This family makes gallons of dill every year, not sure about the
    b&b.

Easier said than done most of the time.
Just have to pay attention and make the effort... :)

I'm trying. Today was last of the 48 hours not on the feet more than
an hour or so after injection. No, I didn't try to see if I could.....I was off my feet more than I was on them but had a few 20 minute or more stretches while working on meals, laundry, etc.

Probably sufficient of a test of your ability to stay on your feet...
and no need to push things anyway.... :)

I've had the 2nd shot now and am halfway thru the restriction time.
Trying to be off my feet less, nothing super urgent that needs tending
to today. Also had my eyes dialated earlier this afternoon so can't do
much of anything until they're fully clear. (I'll probably be talking
with my regular eye doctor later this fall about doing the cataracts.)

That could be rather painful so I'll be very careful of how I
    sit/stand.
    Exactly.

So I've not grabbed the stool yet, been doing short on the feet tasks instead.

Might want to intersperse some stool time... might as well practice
    the technique... (G)

    Probably so, actually.

At least not the Market... and hopefully not the restaurant,
    either... ;)
Don't know when they started but every time we've been there,
they've been very busy. Even times you wouldn't expect much of
a crowd, always a bit of a challenge to find a couple of seats.
    That does sound promising... ;)

Might be worth a trip if we have a southern picnic at some point.

Sounds like a worthy thought... :)

And a trip to the WF farmer's market.

Yes, but I'm now trying to do some planning for the next trip.
    Always something going on... (G)

As my mom liked to say, "immer etwas" (always something).

Indeed... and yes, I recognize the German saying... ;)

    Very appropriate to so much.........

vital, NB>> but I figured out work-arounds... One was the dipper pan

We had a front come thru last night--today's high was 81, low predicted
of 55. Supposed to be about the same tomorrow, then Saturday in the mid
80s and inch back to the upper 80s, maybe 91 next week. Low humidity the
next couple of days, makes it feel like fall isn't too far away.

We're still in the upper 80s/low 90s. Had some rain last night but not enough to break the heat. Hopefully by the time we get back from NY
things will start cooling down more--without any tropical
    disturbances.

Yeah... ours climbed back into a heat wave again... good news is that it
will break on Thursday, and then the highs will be pleasantly in the 70s
for the whole picnic weekend, without much rain in the forecast, either.

    Hi Nancy,

a few years. This family makes gallons of dill every year, not
    sure about the b&b.
Did you trade them some beets....? ;)
No, they do beets also. They also do peaches, sauerkraut and a
    bunch more stuff.
    Heavy-duty putters-up, I see.... ;)

Very much so! Their daughters do likewise with other produce; I guess
they trade off--some of your corn for my sauerkraut sort of deal.
Keeps everybody supplied with good eating, even in the winter.

Very provident... :) And a nice system... :)

Keeps all fed without everybody having to do each item.

I've had the 2nd shot now and am halfway thru the restriction
time. Trying to be off my feet less, nothing super urgent that
    needs tending to today.
Are you seeing any benefit from the shots yet...?
Sometimes I think so, other times I'm not sure. Depends on what
I'm doing, how long I'm on my feet, etc.
Still can't do what you used to, eh...? Is it at least letting
you NB>> stay on your feet longer than you might have been able to without NB>> them... or is it still too soon to tell that....

Too soon to really know. I've got a follow up scheduled for October
31; by then I should know how much of a help or not the shots have
    been.

    That makes sense. :)

They don't seem to have done anything for me.

Also had my eyes dialated earlier this afternoon so can't do
much of anything until they're fully clear. (I'll probably be
talking with my regular eye doctor later this fall about doing
    the cataracts.)
If the cataracts are ripe, it's probably a good thing to get
done, as long as there aren't other factors complicating
    things... :)
    That's the intention.
And your doctor should have a good sense for that...

Last year he said that they were ready to go any time; I half think he
was a bit surprised when I said that I wanted to check with the
retinal specialist first. Got a new perscription which was a help when
the old frames gave out in February; I got new glasses.

So the retinal specialist thinks you're ok to go for the cataract surgeries now....?

Yes, so will talk that over with the regular eye doctor in November.

Just have to get the right mind set--"grab the stool"!
    Yup... :)

So far, keeping tasks to short times on the feet so haven't needed the stool.

Just need to keep it handy for when a task stretches longer than
    expected, I guess... ;)

    It's there.

BTW, does your sister have a baking stone in her oven? Steve
is debating doing a sourdough bread. If she doesn't, no big
deal but rather than schlepping ours to find out she has one,
    it's easier to ask first.
I asked her, she says no... so I guess you'll need to schlep yours...

OK, passed the word on to Steve. Can you e-mail me her address; it has scrolled off my past mail?

Did better than that, just posted an update including it a day or so ago... ;) BTW, she says to spell out "Road" in your GPS (County Road
    40) to make it less likely it will send you to the barn at the top of
    the hill... ;)

OK, and she has a stone now. (G)

Today the heat wave broke... we survived... ;) The high today
was NB>> actually only about 67... it felt heavenly... ;) And the
house is in NB>> the process of cooling off... we don't have any A/C except for my NB>> car... Tonight the low should be in the 50s, but
then the temps start NB>> to climb again by Saturday... ;(

T'was a bit on the chilly side for a bit, actually.
