I drink coffee all day but switch to tea, quite often fruit juice
flavoured, or herbal tisanes at night if I feel like a hot (or cold) non-alcoholic drink.
Roslind has just discovered a wonderful herbal tea maker on her
recent trips up north.
It's called Delice Boreal Tisane in French or Northern Delights
Inuit Herbal Tea in English. It is produced by the fund raising
business arm of the Avataq Cultural Institute, an Inuit owned non-
profit organization dedicated to the protection and advancement of
the language, culture and identity of the Inuit of Nunavik (Northern
Quebec).
Their tisanes are made (in part) from wild plants harvested in
Nunavik by the Nunavimmiut people.
Five varieties are available:
Blend #1 with Labrador Tea (Mamaittuqutik): northern Labrador tea,
bearberry and peppermint leaves plus southern licorice root,
eucalyptus leaves, bitter fennel seeds, coltsfoot leaves and ginger
root.
Blend #2 with Cloudberry (Arpiqutik): cloudberry leaves and roasted
dandelion root, also sarsaparilla root, fenugreek seeds, roasted
mate leaves, carob, roasted chicory root and cinnamon bark.
Blend #3 with ground Juniper (Qisiqtutauyak): ground Juniper berries
and spearmint leaves with echinacea, red clover blossoms, lemon-
grass, burdock root and lemon balm.
Blend #4 with Crowberry (Paurnagaqutik): Crowberry leaves, juniper
berries and birch leaves plus hibiscus blossoms, red poppy flowers.
lemongrass, cinnamon bark, red poppy flowers, star anise, licorice
root and cloves.
Blend #5 Arctic Blend (Ukiurtatuq): Small Labrador tea (tiirluapik)
and peppermint leaves combined with echinacea, elder and chamomile
flowers, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, coltsfoot leaves and marshmallow
root.
These teas are widely available in Montreal, Nunavik (northern
Quebec), Nunavut (eastern arctic), in a handful of select gourmet
tea shops in Canada and western Europe but sadly not in the USA
(yet) and are starting to show up in the NWT but not Yellowknife
(yet). Roslind was able to collect one each of little pouches
individual tea bags of all of the five blends on airlines like
Canadian North and First Air and at the hotels in Kugluktuk,
Kugaaruk and Cambridge Bay.
They are all wonderful and I look forward to getting more in time.
Cheers
Jim
... Their coffee is mediocre but their tea is wonderful
