    66 A&P

Not in this area for years now.

long gone now from any place I've been....

Now gone everywhere. The Canadian division which was still making
money was sold off to Quebec based Metro Stores long ago and their
Ontario stores rebranded as Metro while A&P in the USA folded
completely (bankruptcy) a few years later.

Ironically Canadian subsidiaries of American firms often do better
and last longer than their parent. For example Woolworth/Woolco
in Canada outlasted the parent company and was purchased by Walmart
which is how they got a foothold in Canada. A&W Canada is
management owned and thriving while American A&W is on its last
    legs.

A&P was a leader and an innovator in the early days and became the
number one grocery chain in North America but then they rested on
their laurels and stagnated while others got bigger and and better.

Do the Metro stores still exist...?

Yes. It's one of the Big 3 in Canada.

Sounds like a different marketing climate in Canada... :)

Yep. And it's hard to identify exactly what that difference is. The
unanswered multi billion dollar question is why does Tim Horton's
beat Dunkin Doughnuts here but vice versa in the US when their
products are so similar? Or why the Bay thrives when Sears fails?
And why did Canadian shoppers reject Target?

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

    Title: Illicit Still Trifle
    Categories: British, Desserts, Cake, Alcohol
    Yield: 8 Servings

    8 Trifle sponges
    Raspberry Jam
    8 oz Fresh summer fruits
2 fl Single malt scotch whiskey
    2 fl Drambuie
    2 fl Green ginger wine
    6 Egg yolks
    2 oz Caster (granulated) sugar
    2 ts Cornflour (cornstarch)
    1/2 pt Milk
    1 pt Double (heavy) cream
    1 lg Banana
1 tb Single malt scotch whiskey
    Glace cherries and
    Toasted flaked almonds
    -for garnish

Spread the trifle sponges with jam and break into pieces. Place in
a large trifle dish together with the summer fruits and the
Illicit Still mixture (equal amounts of scotch, Drambuie and
ginger wine) and leave for 45 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare the custard by blending the egg yolks, sugar
and cornflour (corn starch) together in a mixing bowl. Gently heat
the milk and half a pint of cream in a saucepan until hot but not
boiling. Pour over the egg mixture, stirring well and return to
the pan. Heat gently, stirring constantly, until the mixture
thickens. Do not allow to boil. Remove from heat and leave to
    cool, stirring occasionally.

Slice the banana and place over soaked sponges. Pour cooled
custard over the top. Whip remaining cream with a tablespoon of
whiskey and some sugar to taste. Spread cream over custard and
    decorate with cherries and almonds.

A&P was a leader and an innovator in the early days and became the

    A familiar pattern...

Do the Metro stores still exist...?

Yes. It's one of the Big 3 in Canada.

So at least the ghost of A&P still remains... ;)

And why did Canadian shoppers reject Target?

Probably something that seems minor, but makes a bigger difference than
one would think... Interestingly (as I may have mentioned before) Tim
Horton's is pretty big here in Rochester... I'd guess that there are
easily as many Tim Horton's as there are Dunkin Donuts around here, and
they seem to be flourishing.... except for one that was recently built
on the site of what once was one of our favorite places, Yangs... They
bought the property, tore down the old restaurant building, put up a
brand-new building... and were open for all of one day... We are still scratching our heads over that one... That smacks of behind the scenes problems, not necessarily related to the chain itself... The building
still stands there, with the Grand Opening sign torn down, but otherwise
    as it was...

And why did Canadian shoppers reject Target?

... it was nothing like the US target and sold over priced junk is
my guess. I went once and didn't find anything that wasn't better
quality and better price at either Dollerama or Walmart. (I hate
walmart, but there's no where else to shop here)

But you're in Oshawa right? So you've got the Bay, Canadian Tire and

When I go to oshawa... I'm living out in the country until October. I'll
know in just under two weeks if I'll be living in Oshawa in October, or
getting another place in Bowmanville with a room mate.

The Great Canadian Superstore, a large format Loblaws? Not to

I really like the Metro in Bowmanville, and the Loblaws. Both have
amazing fish counters. Got some scallops the other day that melted in
    my mouth.

I'm living out in the country until October ... in Bowmanville

So a lot smaller with either fewer choices or a bit of a drive for
anything other than basic groceries I guess.
