Large sized tomato's are 99 cents for 3 pounds right now

Wow. That must be pretty close to the farm price plus the picker's
wage with virtually no markup. Up here they are currently $2.99 per
pound for nice B.C. green house ones and $1,99 for pale, hard
    California field tomatoes.

In Anchorage we get the $1.99 ones forced to turn red, so there's no flavor added, for about $3.50 a pound. Which is why when I'm in Arizona, or like last
year Hawaii for a month, it's gorge on fresh fruit/vegetables. Bananas are pretty much $0.55 a pound normally and practically weekly at $0.99 for 3 pounds
for a day. Seems like 3 or 4 years ago there was a day where they were $0.17 a
    pound, yes I bought some!

    In Anchorage [...] about $3.50 a pound.

They were up to $3.50 here today.

    Bananas [..] $0.99 for 3 pounds
    yes I bought some!

I like bananas so much that I buy exactly one regardless of the
price! Periodically I get a hankering for a (as in one) peanut
    butter and banana sandwich.

Since we're discussing fruit, rye cereal and what people had for
dinner, I drizzled the last of the leftover sour cherry sauce over
Brie on rye bread for an office lunch. The combination of flavours
    was nice.

This recipe has a flaw. It does not have any tomatoes in the
ingredients list. I guess you just stack on as many as you can
    handle:-}}
