From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to SEAN DENNIS on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 06:46:54
Your message fit in nicely with the discussion of a
year or two ago about having a picnic in central
    Pennsylvania - Williamsport in fact.
Oh, okay, Well, if it ever came to pass, I know the area pretty well now. At least to be able to find supplies and food when I am up there during my evenings off! I normally stay at the Holiday Inn there downtown.

One surprise winner is the airport restaurant,
Cloud 9, which is not cheap, but if you're
careful you can eat pretty well for not too
much - or very well for too much. I'm also
fond of the Crippled Bear, north and ?west
of downtown, which is a dive bar with
    surprisingly good food.

It's been nudging up against $4 in California
    for a long time.
Out here, it's around $2.50 in the sticks. Thankfully, when I travel, the company pays for gas because it's always expensive right off of the interstate.

It's down to 3.49 at Costco near Lilli's.

And there's no real requirement for a recipe,
    so don't worry.
I have moved my laptop back to Slackware Linux so I am readjusting everything. I have moved my Windows 10 install into a virtual machine
    where
it lives happily. Soon, MM will be available on the laptop.

What OS are you running, and do you use a
    DOS emulator?

I love my Chromebook but I need more capability when I'm on the road. The one thing I missed was my offline mail reader setup and the larger
    keyboard.
I'm on my HP Elitebook 840 G1 now and can type comfortably.

This HP Stream has an 11" (diagonal measurement) screen
and perhaps not coincidentally an 11" (diagonal measurement)
keyboard. It's okay to use, but I was used to something
slightly bigger. When I got this, though, my major
criterion was "under 3 lb," and as this weighs in at
2 1/4 or so, that was good for my back and shoulders.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v7.07

    Title: Pork with Cumin
    Categories: Mexican, Pork
    Servings: 7

2 lb Pork Shoulder; Boneless, *
    1/4 c Unbleached Flour
    1/2 c Vegetable Oil
    1/2 c Onion; Chopped, 1 Medium
    2 Bacon; Slices, cut up
    1/2 c Water
    2 tb Orange Juice
    2 tb Lime Juice
    2 tb Chicken Bouillon; (Dry)
    2 tb Cumin Seed
    1 ts Oregano Leaves; Dried
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/4 ts Pepper
    4 c Tomatoes; Chopped, 4 Medium
    2 c Potatoes; Diced **
    1/2 c Dairy Sour Cream

    * Pork shoulder should be cut up into 1-inch cubes. ** Potatoes can
    be
    pared or unpared.

Coat pork with the flour. Heat oil in 10-inch skillet until hot. Cook
    and
stir pork in oil over medium heat until brown. Remove pork with slotted
spoon and drain. Cook and stir onion and bacon in the same skillet until
bacon is crisp. Stir in the pork and the remaining ingredients except
    the
sour cream. Heat to boiling, then reduce heat. Cover and simmer until
    pork
is done, about 45 minutes. Stir in sour cream and heat until hot. Serve.

I will have to go try it one of these days. The James is pretty good food and the service is good, plus it being just a short walk from the elevator (I always wind up with a room on the fifth floor), it is nice when I want something to eat and don't have to go far. Like I said earlier, there is the Perkins next door to the hotel (well, next door to the Hampton Inn which is next door to the Holiday Inn). Though the big Wegman's next to Perkins probably has some good eatin's in it too.

It's down to 3.49 at Costco near Lilli's.

It's floated up to around $2.70 this week.

What OS are you running, and do you use a
    DOS emulator?

I am running Slackware 64 Linux 14.2. I use DOSbox for the emulator for MealMaster though I also can use DOSemu (DOSbox is much smaller and easier to use for this purpose). I also have Windows 10 in a virtual machine (VMware) if I need it.

This HP Stream has an 11" (diagonal measurement) screen
and perhaps not coincidentally an 11" (diagonal measurement)

HP Streams are good computers. I just prefer Linux (Chrome OS is based off of Gentoo Linux from what I have read). Google is adding Linux to be "sideloaded" (in a virtual machine) in Chrome OS later this year which is why I haven't dispatched the Chromebook yet. The Chromebook has no moving parts save for the CPU fan which is good. The Lenovo Chromebook I have is ruggedized and is larger and heavier than a regular Chromebook but it can survive some rough treatment.

No recipe right now (remoted into the BBS) but I did go to our local Tupelo Honey Cafe in Johnson City last night. Several people from the corporate office are visiting, including my boss and a co-worker of mine, so they invited me to have dinner. It was quite nice. It's a bit spendy for my tastes but you do get a lot of food for the money. I had the "grilled Patagonia salmon" dish. It had quinoa, roasted cauliflower, a lightly spicy chile spread on it. It was good enough for me to want to spend $30 for the dinner and a soda again. I'd like to take my parents there some time.

I'd guess that you'd do ok there... I've only been in that one once,
when traveling through, so haven't full experience... but our experience
with Wegmans in general is that one can usually do pretty good... fresh
made subs, fresh made sushi, fresh made pizza... hot and cold bars with
a variety of foods, various "bowl"s (Asian, Italian, Mexican) that one
can heat in the store's microwave, what they call EZmeals (meat, veggie, starch) that one can also heat up there, hot soups, probably more... Or
one could just grab bread and cold cuts from the deli, or cheeses from
the cheese shop to add to olives etc from the Mediterranean bar...

Michael's been in there to actually shop... and I know that at times it
was disappointing, but it's still worth a gander... ;)

I did look up Wegmans online when I got back home. There's a very nice PDF menu you can download for the various "bars" and shops in Wegmans at that particular location. You can call ahead also. I'm planning on trying out the sub shop on the next trip up. There's not much for anything close by near my hotel so another option would be good. I'm sure everything they make is good since it's fresh.

Michael's been in there to actually shop... and I know that at times
it was disappointing, but it's still worth a gander... ;)

You can say that about a lot of food-related places from time to time. One of our local Domino's Pizza stores made national news with reports of massive amounts of rodent droppings being found in their dough. What's odd is that I had eaten there a lot when I was in school (the place is across the street from where my campus was located, so I'd order on my phone in class and grab the food on my lunch break) and there was nary a problem with cleanliness. They used to get 98-100 on the health inspections...

That sounds like a nice place... :)

It is. I am told that the original location in Asheville, NC, is better so one of these days, when I am in Asheville, I'll stop by. I do like to go to the Biltmore during Christmas to look at their tree...even if it is close to $50 to get in now...

    Hi Sean,

I got me a PERFECT laptop for travel in an ASUS model. It's only 3lbs and the cable conection unit is maybe 2oz if that. Thats normally the problem weight when traveling with a laptop. That part can easily weigh another 2 lbs in some cases.

Since with my spinal issues, weight is the main concern, I am really happy with it. I need to get some WIN10 games that don't require a MS account be used over WIFI, but that will be worked out. DOSBOX can handle some of it for me.

Add the bacon/vegetable mixture and 1 cup of the corn bread muffin

Transfer the mixture to an 8-inch square by 1 1/2-inch deep pan.
Moisten the remaining corn bread muffin crumbs with the remaining
butter and sprinkle on top of the corn mixture.

Bake in a preheated, 350 degree F. oven until the crumbs are light
    brown.

    Makes 8 servings.

NOTE: According to Luby's Cafeteria spokeswoman, many Luby's managers
adapt and create their own recipes, and the dishes are available
only at the specific restaurant. That is the case with Spanish
Indian Baked Corn, which is available at the Luby's in Pasadena,

Do you still use your bread machine?

All the time! We pretty much gave up on store bought bread in my Japan years and didn't really change that once we got back except when I am sick or tell Don and Chharlotte I am going to be too busy due to work that week for one of the 2 bread runs (Sat-Sun and WED-Thur schedule). It's the weekday one that varies. I was on work trips for a week twice since 1 Jan so they got store stuff. I'll hit 6 months with 3 bought loaves this year out of some 23 made here (some gets taken to work for the guys)

If I havent posted my Buttermilk bread, will cross it over in MM format later.

I also was silly and let my feelings be hurt when I went into work the next day as I had my first rating brief (i was loaded for bear and ready) but my Boss told me to go home and has my partner briefing for me. 2 days later I can clearly see it was kindness 100% intentional.
