I did... sorry for not responding, and I did ask Shawn, he's all in.

So is this echo suppose to be the discussion around routed netmail? Is the old netmail route chart still a thing?

This echo is supposed to be about Netmail routing, yes. But really... routing is freaking simple. Route the *C method. Meaning, go ahead and route for your immediate connections, but out-of-net stuff should go through the NC/RC/ZC model.

The reason we had a chart and presumably why I inherited this echo was largely due to the fact that with Internet connections, people are getting feeds from anyone - thus Netmail routing became a total mess. The last time the chart was updated was by Ross Cassell years ago and he gave up maintaining it.

I very stubbornly believe if everyone follows the *C topology, there would be no routing issues at all, and really the NC of a Net should have direct connections with his nodes - no matter where those nodes are getting feeds.

I completely agree. You and I have had a long conversation about this exact topic.

I have been establishing connections with all the other RCs in order to facilitate netmail routing in and out of R12. We are somewhat unique as you
are the ZC and happen to be in the Region, but I still have connections with the NCs in the region for that exact reason.

Is this chart still floating around anywhere? I'd like to take a crack at it.

Yep. I definitely agree with that. All my nodes in Net135 I have direct connects with, a majority of them feed directly off me, too, because I run a pretty solid setup. But, as it is, I make sure all of my connections do indeed at /least/ setup a session specifically for at least Netmail feed from the HUB, and uses that for routing netmail. Beyond that, they're free to pick up a feed for echo/files from the HUB or whatever they wish from then on. I've been helping where needed in new setups to make that happen.

Exactly, sounds much like what I'm doing here.

Yeah. I even have this process super simplified for everyone that's coming in. I have my HUB server which has a Website as well, empowered by a text-based CMS engine, Grav CMS, so there's web forms that can be used to apply for Fidonet itself, simular to Janis's site, and there's a form specific for the HUB itself which practically anyone can use, but I send it to new FidoNet users in my region specifically so that I can get them setup on my side easily, and they can make the choices of what they want, such as passwords, specifically.

I'm working also on getting that site translated to Spanish since I deal with some of that in my net. :)
