After spending consider amount of time today comparing features between the primary bbs packages before I take the plunge back into BBSing from scratch, I have to admit that Mystic has progressed in leaps & bounds in the past 5+ years. Thinking back to the late 1998/99 & early 2000 status, when I think g00r00 departed for higher education, wow! What a significant push to critical mass!

It's all true.

Would it be better to start off with A38 release or A39 stable enough to build from scratch?

I just setup a Mystic BBS using A39 and use it for a couple of points. I believe that is a good starting point.

Go with A39. Both are alphas, might as well use the latest, and A39 was officially released a couple of weeks ago. :)

A39 has been solid here and was recommended over A38 in particular by the author since a lot of the socket code was undergoing revision throughout A38.

IMO, It would always be better to start with the newest stable release (A39). There were a few bugs that was fixed in A39. You won't be disappointed!
g00r0r has put in ALOT of work recently, alot of 'on the fly' stuff we asked him to add, to the point he's a little burnt out. I must admit I prolly
didn't help matters :( He's been on a 'break' for a few weeks now. his
box(es) was giving out after all the work he put in, and as far as I know
he's taking a little break. He did it at a good time, Mystic A39 is running like a champ for me! (under Ubuntu/X64) It does EVERYthing I need and then more!

Not one bit, its running like a MegaMillion Dollar winner on Slackware 14! I feel like I am stepping back into the year 2000. Until I look & see the white hair on my head!! Is it sane for Grandfathers to be Sysops or am I past it?

I think I am at the point of "how do I do this" & "hmmm, I didnt do that right..." But I finally discovered a reason to buy a Raspberry PI!! Thanks Mystic, my wife is mad at me, again...

Once I get the PI setup & the bbs moved onto it, I will be ready to put it online.

I have pretty much installed Mystic on most of the OS's available. Awhile back on a Pi3 also. In a number of cases for testing Pre-Alphas. Currently I Mystic setup on 64b versions of Windows and Linux as well as 32b Pi3. All run well.

A39 has worked friggin great for me on the Pi. The author has done a
marvelous job here, IMHO.

Geesh, since you put it that way (4 grand daughters, 1 grand son) I REALLY
feel old! ;) Just imagine, what our grandkids will call 'old' when they get close to our age! Technology has jump so fast since we were in our teen
years. You don't even have to touch your cellphone and do stuff, text, GPS, etc... It's crazy, I told myself I would never be dependant on my phone, but it got me! :\

Believe me, if I lived closer I'd be first in line to get him a few cold
ones! In all my years of BBS'ing and being a SysOp, I'd have to say he's
first on my list of programmers that really listen to users and add stuff
like right now. I've got ALOT of respect for him

I was thinking about getting a PI too, but I've heard it has issues with running DOSEMU/DOS doors. I have alot of DOS based doors on my bbses. I
still might get one, heck, for the small footprint and they are pretty cheap.
