I'm sure he does. That doesn't mean that Linux itself (the kernel)
    owes anything to GNU.

For that matter, RMS owes much to AT&T Bell Labs and BSD for creating
the system he modeled his GNU utilities off of. He personally owes a
great deal to Dennis Ritchie for designing C, which he both wrote much
    of the GNU utilities in, and for which he created a compiler (GCC;
originally the "GNU C Compiler" before it was the "GNU Compiler
Collection"). Perhaps we should call GNU Unix/GNU?

    Nah, that'd be silly. :-D

On 10 Feb 2020 at 02:43p, Digital Man pondered and said...

I'm sure he does. That doesn't mean that Linux itself (the kernel) owes anything to GNU.

    Well there is the compiler...

I'm not even sure how relevant _that_ is. When Torvalds started
writing Linux, he could have used Tanenbaum's compiler from the ACK.
Now days, the cool kids are working on getting Linux to build with
    clang and LLVM. :-)

GCC will, perhaps sadly, be relegated to the dustbin of history,
just like pcc before it. Part of that is Stallman's intransigence
about organizing it internally so that people can build tools with
gcc. For example, he doesn't want the front-ends decoupled from
the rest in a meaningful way so that it could be embedded into e.g.
IDE's or things like language servers, because that _might_ tempt
someone using into GCC with non-free software. It's an extreme
position. (GCC also does trivial constant folding in the compiler
front-end, so the AST you get out of it is not a faithful
    representation of the text source.)

I see 1000 replies to this original question of a few days ago and I am not going to read every one of them, so, if I repeat some stuff ... my preference depends ... depends on how I want/need to interact with SBBS for any specific reason ... to just monitor activity, I prefer winblows because the sbbsctrl is the most robust under that environment; plus, certainly, the intsallation and configuration wizard in windows is easier ... I haven't used SBBS with OSX, but, I used to use OS2 SBBSv2.+ using the virtual comports that allowed for telnet ... as for Linux ... that is too vague, as there are myriads of Linux flavors and they are not all the same ie: GNU/Linux Slackware, Debian, Centos OS, RH, Fedora, *BSD, etc are all very different at the CLI level ... over the years I have used SBBS under Slackware as it compiles cleanly, but Slackware is not an easy OS to keep updated ... just my nickles worth

That was a construction by Stallman that was based entirely
on inaccuracies. His contention is that Linux owes a great
debt of gratitude to the GNU project for ... something. But
"Linux" refers to the kernel, not the userspace, and that
owes far more to Andy Tannenbaum and the 1127 crew at BTL
    than to GNU or RMS.

Stallman is a creepy peice of shit. I'm honestly surprised he didn't put some sort of GNU naming convention requirement in the GPL.

Your poll is here. still. The problem is it wasn't addressed to "All" and showed up on my system with a blank "To" field.

    I think it's a PEBCAK error

No, actually I think that's how polls work in Synchronet. Whenever someone posts a poll, I've noticed they all seem to have a blank "To" field.

Weird! Maybe a bug? I used Ecweb's Voting System. Worked on other areas though.

Ecweb just provides an interface to Synchronet's voting system; ecweb doesn't have its own independent voting system.

    Thanks Tony.

No problem. I have since been forced to reconsider setting up the twit filter, because of a very abusive person elsewhere, though it seems that person has gone away. Maybe the originating sysop decided to boot them, in which case, I'll be back to not worrying about twit filters.

hey i have millionaire filtered via twitlist but still seeing his
    voting questions.

has this been corrected already? i havent updated in a while.

I suppose, as sentient being, you could employ your own 'twistlist' and simp ignore and not open any posts/replies from Millionaire :-P

    that's what i was saying.

i have him in my twitlist but when he votes it still goes through.
i have no choice but to see them when reading msgs on my bbs.

I thought you lived in Canada. Did you move to Australia? Or is that where you've lived all along? Maybe I remembered wrong.
