64bit systems can run 32bit apps, as far as I know...

64bit editions of Windows do not include the "NTVDM" virtual DOS machine system for running 16-bit DOS applications.

I would suggest running a 32-bit version of Windows in a VM (and run the BBS in the VM) if you wish to run 16-bit DOS programs on a 64-bit edition of Windows.

So to be clear NO win 10 O/S either 32 bit or 64 bit can run the 16 bit
doors? So I'd be better off with say a 32 bit version of Windows 8.1 Pro
as a fresh install of an microsoft o/s? (I'm assuming that can do 16 bit
    w/o an VM or dosbox).

What is the best VM to use for this.

If you're looking to pay for a VM and just want to run a single VM on a desktop, VMWare Workstation is pretty good. For a free VM, VirtualBox seems better - I'm pretty sure the free VMWare Player doesn't support snapshots, and being able to take a snapshot of your VM is a huge advantage when upgrading, tweaking, etc.

I haven't used HyperV in a while, someone else may have some perspective.

The problem I have is with the lack of local users. No one's touched my local version of Global War in months. It's easier for me to connect CoA and BBSlink games to my BBS and skip the local installs, and there's more of a user population.

That is true, if you have compatibility mode set ... but win64 cannot run 16 bit progs, which most DOS Doors are written in

If only someone would port dosemu to Windows...

or ... if MS would include some NTVDM hack in their x64 for full backward compatibility ... maybe DM could hack a x64 NTVDM driver of sorts :-P

... and THAT, my friend, is why I do not bother with DOORS (other than the stock doors shipped with Synchronet). My main SBBS install is 3.17b(c?) under Slackware 14.2 x86_64 ... trying to get a decent VM or DosBox working correctly
is a bear and, for me, hardly worth the effort :-)

I see you have lots of soltions, good luck

Pardon me ...but doing a fresh install of windows (10? or 8.1? not sure yet)

thus this box is only for SBBS use...so I am setting it up (now) as 32
bit version of whatever win 10 etc)

thus the whole VM above etc will not be needed right? w/ 32 bit windows
    and newest sbbs and doors?

(probably a dumb question but trying to get ducks in a row I have
    forgotten much)

    thanks

That too can be a pain in the whahuzzie ... you still need to make sure NTVDM is installed, then you may have to add the 16 bit compatibility mode for each 16 bit code you want to run and sometimes even then you may also have to specify which OS to mimic for each 16 bit code you want to run ... see http://techgenix.com/16-bit-applications-windows-10/ for more information.

    Hi Digital Man and All

I would suggest running a 32-bit version of Windows in a VM (and run the BBS in the VM) if you wish to run 16-bit DOS programs on a 64-bit edition of Windows.

What is the best VM to use for this.

    Thank you

The problem I have is with the lack of local users. No one's touched my loca PF>version of Global War in months. It's easier for me to connect CoA and BBSli PF>games to my BBS and skip the local installs, and there's more of a user PF>population.

I personally am not concerned if I don't get a bunch of local users.
There is only one other BBS in Little Rock right now, and one in
Mayflower, about 25 miles northwest of Little Rock...that's all the
    BBS's left in Arkansas.

Some days, I may be the only "logon", but I run the BBS for MY enjoyment...it's one of the few hobbies that I can still do.
