I thought I read somewhere on here the someone was importing REDIT into Synchronet. If it can be done, does anyone have any info on this. Thanks

Deuce was working on a sbbs<->reddit link thing a few (?) years ago. You can ask him about its status, but I don't know if it was ever completed/working.

yes, I meant Reddit. I'll look into that, and let you know. It's seems quite popular, and it may be the ticket to increased usership.

You already have to have a separate Reddit account to use their site. I'd
just be concerned that logging into a BBS to use Reddit would be an added layer of complexity.. Seems like it might be easier just to use Reddit directly.

i think [website] to [bbs] is an idea, but not a good idea. why not just go to the website to use it? especially one with msg forums and the intergration would not be seamless.

reddit, facebook, and twitter should stay on their sites and trying to scrape the data and put it on a bbs with an ugly hack isnt a good idea in my opinion. it seems like a waste of time with no payoff.

perhaps we should work on creating another web interface that intergrates with the bbs [quickly!] and is aesthetically pleasing to the regular joe.
something that is attractive and fun to use. something more fluid than putting our msg bases on a forum type interface, and our file areas on a html interface.

Over the years, there have at times been threads over there about bbsing

of interest that would get them visiting once, for nostalgia, and then
you'd never see them again... that kind of interest. :)

The folks who are really into FB and many other social media sites are the
ones who must have instant gratification or they lose interest. "I posted

our msg bases on a forum type interface, and our file areas on a html >interface.

like a facebook clone. oops! but why just not use facebook!

The folks who are really into FB and many other social media sites are the ones who must have instant gratification or they lose interest. "I posted

that's like 99% of the people now!

on FB, and someone has already liked it!" types. I have co-workers who are shocked that I don't carry my personal phone around the office so that I
can be in constant contact with social media. I would rather leave it sitting on my desk, next to my desk phone, so that it does not fall off somewhere or distract me from whatever I should be doing.

somehow i don't think that redditors will come flocking to a BBS...

Over the years, there have at times been threads over there about bbsing that seem to get some folks interested. My guess would be it is the type of interest that would get them visiting once, for nostalgia, and then you'd never see them again... that kind of interest. :)

I only just started using Reddit about 6 months ago.. There does seem to be a bit of interest in some old-school things there though.

Back in the day, when we had several callers a day that would log on
more than once to check mail and debate things, BBSing was a lot
    like that.

If it was between local users, yes, it could get very fast, but echomail always had the huge delays, unless the sysop was well off and crashing mail through. :D

I thought sysops back then could have their BBS call their uplink as many times as they wanted, at least technically.. It seemed some FIDO sysops could have a bit of a fit if your BBS called theirs too much, too little, or at the wrong time(s)..

Yes, I know (my BBS is on FidoNet). I was just saying I thought it was true back then as well. I ran a BBS in the 90s and got it on FidoNet in the last couple years I ran it, and I seem to remember that being the case.

It seemed some FIDO sysops could have a bit of a fit if your BBS
called theirs too much, too little, or at the wrong time(s)..

at one time, i had some system polling here once a minute... there were several problems with that...

    1. there isn't that much mail flowing.

    2. the tosser would/could be locked out from handling the
mail because the system was connecting so much. when systems
connect, there are semaphores created so that other software
on the system knows about the connection. when the tosser
goes to run, it looks for those semaphores. if the semaphore
for a system exists, there are two choices the tosser can
    make.

    a. skip all processing completely. inbound and outbound.

    b. process the mail but leave mail for systems with active
semaphores in temp files so they can be moved to the
outbound later when the semaphores are no longer in place.
since these temp files are pkts with a different name,
this is quite easy to do and the destination system can be
determined by simply reading the temp files' pkt header.

there are/were a couple more problems but i've lost that train while writing the above... the above two are the main one, though...

perhaps we should work on creating another web interface that intergrates with the bbs [quickly!] and is aesthetically pleasing to the regular joe. something that is attractive and fun to use. something more fluid than putting our msg bases on a forum type interface, and our file areas on a html interface.

That's an overgeneralisation. There's still heaps of web forums around, many are support forums for various software and systems. As for Facebook, I'm not sure you could gate an echo into something like a FB group, because the structure is so different. And also I'm not sure there's a way to submit posts that are not yours. IOW, maybe the best you could do is hang a single user point off FB.

People don't go to discrete web forums any more - it's all Facebook.

That's an overgeneralisation. There's still heaps of web forums around, many are support forums for various software and systems. As for Facebook,

That's true, but it becomes a question of what type of user you're trying to serve.

The vast majority prefer a personal feed of messages that are targeted directly at them or align with a variety of their interests, and in one place if possible. So it seems to me, anyhow.

People who visit specialized forums for niche discussion or expert advice are motivated to go out of their way looking for info, or they're less averse to that sort of interface. In the latter case, that puts them some degrees closer to being a BBSer than most.

If you wanted to present an interface for people who almost exclusively use modern social media type stuff (I say "modern" to stave off the "BBSs are the original social media" type comments), it'd have to be a bit different than what we have. Being able to quickly scan topics without paging through tons of individual messages would be a big start. We theoretically have a custom personal feed in the form of new message scans and scanned areas, but I think even that's too verbose.

Things could be done, but I'm not sure if there would be a point to it. What we have are engines for a more traditional forum experience (textmode, web-based, or with a particular client) and they could be used to serve people who want that sort of thing. Those people and their communities still exist and will be around for a long time.
