Do you need to run a firewall and anti-virus with Linux for
Synchronet?
Is it mandatory or optional?

a firewall is like a condom to protect the machine/network... anti-virus is like spermicide to try to stop whatever may get by the condom...

Synchronet?
Firewall - yes. AV - no.

AV no? Wouldn't you still want to at least catch viruses and prevent them from being spread to other systems?

But I thought firewalls and anti-virus wasn't important because
no one can hack into Linux or get a virus for it either.

Of course, Linux has its own firewall - iptables. :) I don't normally use it on end hosts for the reason you said above, but I do use it on machines acting as routers to keep out unwanted probes and bots. On the tunnel router that provides IPv4 to the BBSs, I filter out SIP traffic, because I do have some internal SIP devices, and SIP probes are constant. On another network, I've had to block a number of ports from probes using iptables.

FWIW, cvs.synchro.net, my primary Linux server runs completely in a DMZ with a static public IPv4 address, so no firewall/filtering and no NAT. Been running that way since 1995 and only had a problem once when my RedHat5 FTP server (ncftpd?) was pwned. And no anti-virus software
(though my Windows server's AV will find and quarantine any infected uploads automatically). <shrug>
