Protests are under way across the country against the suspension of
    parliament.

Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Saturday to protest against Boris Johnson’s move to suspend parliament.

Earlier in the day, hundreds of protesters had already brought Whitehall
in London to a standstill – with demonstrators stretching across much of
the usually busy road as they gathered outside the gates of Downing Street.

Organisers are backing the use of civil disobedience during the wave of protests, in which demonstrators will “resist the parliament shutdown” in dozens of towns and cities.

The shadow chancellor, John McDonnell, will be among high-profile speakers addressing demonstrators massing outside the gates of Downing Street.

Jeremy Corbyn threw his weight behind the protests, saying: “The public outrage at Boris Johnson shutting down democracy has been deafening.
People are right to take to the streets – and I encourage everyone to join the demonstrations in London and across the country tomorrow.”

One Facebook group for the event, called “Stop the coup, defend
democracy”, said: “Boris Johnson is trying to shut down our democracy so that he can deliver on his Brexit agenda. We can’t just rely on the courts
or parliamentary process to save the day. We all have a duty to stand up
    and be counted.”

Protests are planned in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle,
Bristol, Glasgow and Swansea, among more than 80 planned demonstrations
due to take place over the next week.

Critics have accused Johnson of trying to circumvent parliamentary
democracy to stop MPs blocking a no-deal Brexit. The protests are being organised by a series of groups including Momentum, the grassroots
campaign organisation set up to support Corbyn. They are also being backed
by the Guardian columnist Owen Jones.

Laura Parker, Momentum’s national coordinator, pledged to “shut down the streets”. She said: “We have a barely elected millionaire prime minister who is happy to exploit a loophole in our flawed democracy to force
through a Trump-first, no-deal Brexit. He is part of the same tiny,
privileged elite which has been hoarding power at the top and eroding our democracy for decades.

“There are thousands of people from all over the UK and across the
political spectrum who will protest to stop Johnson close the doors on our democracy.”

Michael Chessum, a Momentum activist who runs the campaign group Another
Europe is Possible, which is also behind the protest, told the Guardian he supported peaceful civil disobedience at the demonstrations. The
campaigner, who describes himself as “hard-left, hard-remain”, said: “I think it’s an essential part of any successful protest movement.
Ultimately, a successful protest movement isn’t about asking nicely. Boris Johnson is not amenable to some kind of intellectual conversion, he is out
to dismantle democracy to deliver his vision of Brexit.”

He added: “When democracy is under threat, people have to take matters
into their own hands as well. I think it’s a really nice atmosphere.
    People are angry, they’re energetic, but they’re also good-natured. It’s a
very peaceful atmosphere as well, so I’d anticipate that kind of thing
    will continue.”

Izzy Warren, of the UK Student Climate Network, which is also backing the protests, said: “We need a well-functioning parliament and strong
democratic structures to successfully prevent irreversible climate
breakdown. Shutting down parliament to force through political agendas is
the antithesis to what is needed, and is exactly why young people are
furious at the very same politicians failing to take the climate crisis seriously.”

Scotland Yard said: “A proportionate policing plan is in place. Any public order incidents will be dealt with appropriately.”

    ### - i knew it wouldn't be long before the protests started lol, his

MPs to vote again on early election motion next week

It comes after the House of Commons rejected Boris Johnson's plan for a
snap election on 15 October in a vote on Wednesday.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-49591630

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said Labour wanted an election, but its priority was stopping a no-deal Brexit.

The PM will later accuse Jeremy Corbyn of "a cowardly insult to democracy"
for not backing his call for a poll.

Mr Johnson - who sources say regards today as the first day of an election campaign - will argue the Labour leader is denying people their say on the progress of Brexit.

Meanwhile, the prime minister's brother Jo Johnson - who backed Remain in
the 2016 EU referendum - has quit as Tory MP and minister, saying he is
"torn between family and national interest".

And independent MP Luciana Berger, who left the Labour Party for Change UK earlier this year, has joined the Liberal Democrats, saying she is acting
"in the national interest, to offer a vital, positive alternative to
    Johnson and Corbyn".

The fresh vote on an early election is scheduled just before Parliament is
due to be prorogued - or suspended - from next week until 14 October.

Announcing the vote, Commons leader Jacob Rees-Mogg said the suspension
would begin on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday but did not say precisely when.

The government-controlled commission responsible for setting the date has
not yet made a decision, he added.

Opposition parties are in talks about how to respond to the prime
minister's call for a mid-October election, amid concern over whether it
should be delayed until after an extension has been agreed to prevent a
    no-deal Brexit on 31 October.

A bill aimed at preventing a no-deal Brexit was approved by the Commons on Wednesday and a deal was agreed in the early hours of Thursday that Tory
peers would not attempt to filibuster - talk it out - in the Lords.

The government says this bill will now complete its passage through the
    Lords on Friday.

But, in a speech later, Mr Johnson will again attack what he calls "the surrender bill" for paving the way for more "dither and delay".

Number 10 said the bill "would in essence overturn the biggest democratic
vote in our history - the 2016 referendum". It added: "The PM will not do this."

Labour and other opposition MPs say they will not back the prime
minister's call to have a general election while the option of a no-deal
Brexit on 31 October remains open to Mr Johnson.

Mr McDonnell told the BBC that Labour would only agree once it had ensured
the legislation to protect against a no-deal Brexit, but he would prefer
to have an election "later rather than sooner".

He said Labour was "consulting" with other opposition parties "to
determine the date" of a general election.

"The problem that we've got is that we cannot at the moment have any
confidence in Boris Johnson abiding by any commitment or deal that we
could construct," he said. "So we are now consulting on whether it's
better to go long, therefore, rather than to go short."

    ### - boris is getting his ass kicked haha, and is effectively now
    22-short of a working government majority :D

lol even his brother has resigned??

he 'threatened' his own mp's with an election into backing him, only they didn't back him so now he's dis-empowered 26 of 'em and is calling for an election while accusing the labour party of stalling?? lol :)))

you're screwed boris, and only a general election is gonna start sorting
    this mess out now!

the tory party is in total disarray haha, they're imploding!

gud + it's about time we had a left-wing government in this county :)

bye-bye boris, you didn't last long as either foreign secretary or prime minister hah! :D
