"The 'Four Pieces for Guitar' (1993) were written for, and dedicated to
[John Feeley] and received their first performance in Wake Forest University, North Carolina, USA on 1st October, 1994, performed by [John Feeley].
It was first recorded by [John Feeley] in 1996. The work is in four movements, which are titled Aria, Narrative, Fantasy and Finale. The original programme note provided by the the composer, is as follows: 'These pieces were written
at the end of 1993 following a request for a work by the celebrated Irish guitarist John Feeley. I was attracted by the variety of sonorities possible on the guitar and attempted to create textures which exploit contrasting sounds and
moods. There are echoes of the same motives and phrases througout the four movements, yet each stands as an independent unit and may be played as an individual piece. There is an aspect of story telling involved in the musical dialog, a particularly Irish skill, and any sense of fantasy and imagination that can be brought to a performance will be helpful.'
