"The starry sky, summoned forth here by the clear timbres of harmonics, illuminates the enormous, baroque cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, a city that exists simply because of faith in a miracle. Legend says that St James's body, after having been beheaded by Herod, was wondrously transported in seven days by the Saint's disciples to northern Spain, where it lay forgotten for hundreds of years. In 813, starlight guided a shepherd to a site, on which he discovered the Saint's remains. Over this spot stands the cathedral erected during the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, in which the relics of St James are entombed, and to which hundreds of millions of pilgrims have journeyed from the middle ages until today." - Michael Lorimer (editor)

    Notes and Legend
    ----------------
"The performer of Postcards from Spain will find it impossible to sustain every note for its written value. Neverthless, it is always possible to communicate the composer's intention, and therefore the score is presented in this edition as Thea Musgrave wrote it, and as she hopes the listener will imagine it, rather
than as a precise depiction of the literal sound that one performer might produce. The ears fo the listener, rather then the fingers of the performer, guide the fingering. This means that in the first serenade, Cantaor,
for example, repeated notes are fingered on adjacent strings rather then on one string. If instead, the notes were simply played on one string, which would be easier for the performer, the sound might not be so interesting. Whilst this fingering is a model that pleases the composer and the editor, the score is presented as the composer conceived it, and other fingerings are possible."
