Well, you're wrong. On several levels, in fact.
He came to my shop because local people told
him I was the go-to dude for vintage Fender
repairs. (Like, in fact, a bunch of other
folks you may have heard of.) The next time
he came through Denver, about a year later,
he stopped off at my shop to say howdy, and
gave me a swag bag which had a hat, a couple
of "I'm a Dick Head" T-shirts, and an 8X10
glossy for my Wall of Fame, on which he
inscribed "Thanks for saving me, Willie!"
He didn't need anything, he just came by for grins.
He also gave me his phone number and invited
me to go surfing with him if I was ever in
his area. He was a helluva nice guy. He was
in for a re-tube the next year, and brought me
another swag bag and a new glossy, this time
in color. He didn't send his amp with a runner,
like most of the tours I've worked for - he
came himself.
